Google has just released its biggest refresh of Street View coverage in Ghana since the tool arrived in the country in 2016 — about nine years ago. If you use Google Maps to explore places before you visit or navigate unfamiliar areas, this update makes Ghana’s cities, roads, and landmarks searchable in a way they haven’t been before.
What’s New in Ghana’s Street View
The update covers Ghana’s two largest cities — Accra and Kumasi — in much greater detail. You can now virtually walk through Kejetia Market in Kumasi, one of West Africa’s largest open-air markets, and past Accra’s National Theatre. Sports stadiums like the Accra Sports Stadium and Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi are also newly mapped.
Beyond cities, Google’s cameras have traveled three major highways: the N10 northbound through Tamale, and the N12 and N2 in Ghana’s eastern and western regions. The company used upgraded cameras to sharpen image quality and improve color accuracy on these routes.
Cultural and heritage sites now have digital coverage too. You can virtually explore Ghana’s UNESCO-listed colonial forts along the coast, traditional Asante architecture near Kumasi, the Volta River, Adomi Bridge, and Aburi Botanical Gardens. Coastal areas like Cape Coast and Takoradi are next on Google’s priority list.
Why This Matters for You
Better Street View coverage improves how Google Maps works in Ghana. Navigation apps become more accurate. Delivery and logistics services can plan routes more reliably. If you’re expecting visitors from abroad, they can now preview Accra, Kumasi, and major landmarks before arriving — which boosts Ghana’s appeal as a tourist destination.
Ghana has branded itself as a tech and tourism hub in West Africa. Digital tools like Google Maps are part of that story. During the 2019 “Year of Return” campaign, the country drew tens of thousands of African diaspora visitors — and better online visibility helps attract more.
The Bigger Picture
Most of sub-Saharan Africa lags behind Europe and North America when it comes to Street View coverage. Google is closing that gap gradually. It launched Street View in Namibia earlier this year using the same approach. But large parts of Ghana — and the wider region — remain unmapped.
Google also deployed new camera hardware in Ghana this year, the most advanced Street View camera it has built. That signals this update is just the start; more coverage is coming.
What You Should Do
Open Google Maps on your phone or computer, search for a place in Accra, Kumasi, or along the highways mentioned above, and click the Street View icon (the orange Pegman figure). Explore before your next trip, or show visitors what Ghana looks like virtually. The imagery is live now.
Keep an eye on Cape Coast and Takoradi over the next few months — Google says those are priority targets for detailed city-level updates.
