A group of European angel investors is backing a major AI startup pitch contest in Accra this September. The Estonian Business Angels Network (EstBAN) is co-funding the headline pitch competition at the Pan African AI and Innovation Summit (PAAIS), which runs September 22-23 at Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City.

For Ghana-based founders, this is straightforward: a chance to pitch live to regional and international investors, with winners getting mentoring, exposure, and access to EstBAN’s network for potential investment or partnerships.

Why Estonian Angels Care About Accra

Estonia, a small Baltic country, has built a reputation for digital government services that other nations copy. Its angel community has backed deep tech and AI companies worldwide. Their interest in African founders signals appetite for new markets and ideas, not charity.

The timing matters for Ghana. President John Mahama’s government launched the National AI Strategy in April, which relies heavily on private investment. The plan targets around GH¢200 billion in foreign and local investment for AI, with focus areas including health, agriculture, finance, and public services. A European network backing local founders shows the strategy can work beyond announcements.

Ghana’s AI Standing and What This Contest Offers

Ghana ranked 72nd globally and sixth in Africa on the 2025 Global AI Index, behind Egypt, Mauritius, South Africa, and Tunisia. Felix Donkor, who organises the summit, framed the EstBAN partnership bluntly: “We want startups funded, ideas tested.”

Pitch contests are common. The real test is whether introductions made in Accra turn into actual money reaching founders after the event ends. The summit also has backing from Ghana’s Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, University of Ghana Digital Youth Village, and Brandeis University GDS.

What You Should Do

If you’re running an AI startup in Ghana or West Africa, applications are open now on the PAAIS summit website. The pitch is September 22-23. Check eligibility and deadlines immediately if you’re interested.

For founders not yet ready, watch how many deals actually close after the event. That will tell you whether Accra is becoming a real hub for international AI investment or another good-news story that doesn’t reach your bank account.
