MoMo robbery Ghana — Police inspector arrested over alleged involvement in MoMo robbery - GhanaWeb

A police inspector in Kumasi has been arrested for allegedly robbing a mobile money vendor at gunpoint. The officer, Bright Appiah Danquah, stationed at Abuakwa, is accused of stealing GH¢38,600 from a woman named Victoria Arkoh.

Here’s what happened: Danquah allegedly left his phone at one of the robbery scenes. He later went to a police station to report the phone as missing. But investigators traced the device and connected it to multiple robbery incidents in Kumasi, including attacks on mobile money vendors.

What This Means for Your MoMo Account

This case highlights a real risk that MoMo users face: armed robbers targeting vendors and customers who carry large amounts of mobile money. Unlike a bank theft that happens digitally, these robberies are physical crimes where someone steals your phone or forces you to transfer money.

The case also raises a troubling question: if someone inside the police force can commit these crimes, what does that mean for victim trust and investigation quality? Social media users have expressed frustration, with many calling for stricter vetting during police recruitment.

How to Protect Your MoMo Account

  • Don’t keep large sums on your phone. Withdraw cash after major transactions. Vendors should deposit daily takings rather than holding cash-equivalent value on their account.
  • Use a PIN and keep it private. Never share your MoMo PIN with anyone, even MTN staff or police.
  • Keep your phone secure. Use a phone lock code and don’t leave your device unattended in public.
  • Report suspicious activity immediately. If you notice unauthorized transfers, call MTN customer service right away to freeze your account.
  • If robbed, file a report with police AND MTN. Both organizations need to know so they can trace the money and prevent further fraud.

Why This Matters

Mobile money has made it easier for Ghanaians to send cash and avoid carrying physical money. But that convenience means robbers now see MoMo vendors and users as targets. A police officer being arrested for these crimes shows the problem spans beyond street criminals.
