Imagine sending a message that doesn’t just sit there as text — instead, a little animated character walks into someone’s chat and performs your message for you. That’s what Pixi Garden, a new iPhone app, does. It’s still early days and niche, but it shows where messaging might head.
What are these animated AI characters?
A “Pixi” is a smart 3D character you send instead of typing. When someone receives it, they watch the character walk in, do a little performance, and deliver what you wanted to say. Think of it like sending a message, but the character does the talking (or text-scrolling) for you.
The app currently has three characters: a cat, a robot, and an animated envelope. Only the envelope can handle voice messages right now — the cat and robot stick to text.
You can task these characters to do more than just deliver messages. They can tell jokes, play Tic Tac Toe, or play Whack-A-Mole with the person receiving them.
How does it actually work?
The clever part: you don’t need a new messaging app. Pixi Garden works inside Apple’s Messages app on iPhone and iPad. Support for WhatsApp and other platforms is reportedly on the way, which could mean you’ll be able to send these animated characters across different platforms.
In testing by Digital Trends, the app worked smoothly. Messages sent without issues, though the talking envelope needed a couple of tries before it performed properly.
Should you care?
Right now, it’s a fun novelty. The concept is interesting — the company calls it “agentic media” — but there’s not enough variety yet to use it daily. Three characters and basic tricks aren’t much to work with.
For Ghanaians who chat constantly on WhatsApp, this could become a fun way to make conversations feel more playful, especially once more characters and features arrive. But don’t expect to replace your regular messages anytime soon.
Where to get it
Pixi Garden is available on Apple’s App Store for iPhone and iPad. Android users are out of luck for now.
What to watch: If you’re curious, download it and try sending a Pixi to a friend who uses iPhone. It takes seconds, and the reactions are fun. Check back in a few months — the developers will likely add more characters and tricks that might actually change how you chat.
