Fake mobile subscriptions and how to stop them

Mobile Subscription, subscriptions Many Ghanaians have recently reported receiving random mobile subscription messages claiming they’ve subscribed to paid gaming or entertainment services — even though they never signed up for anything.

Messages like these are becoming increasingly common:

“You have subscribed to Gaming Portal Daily. Fee: GH₵0.25. To unsubscribe, send STOP GD to 4025.”
“You have subscribed to DIVA AI. Fee: GH₵0.40. To unsubscribe, send STOP to 3545.”
“You have subscribed to Mobile Football Mania. Fee: GH₵0.35. To unsubscribe, send STOP FT to 1977.”

They look legitimate — but most users say they never opted in. That’s your first warning sign.

What’s Really Going On (Mobile Subscription, subscriptions)

These are likely Value-Added Service (VAS) scams, which silently deduct airtime from your balance through unauthorized subscriptions. Fraudsters partner with shady third-party services that exploit telecom loopholes and automatically charge unsuspecting users.

Common tricks include:

  • Using names like “Football Mania” or “AI Chat” to sound credible.
  • Charging small daily fees that go unnoticed.
  • Making it difficult or impossible to unsubscribe.

A few pesewas daily may seem harmless — but GH₵0.30 per day adds up to almost GH₵9 a month, and across millions of users, it’s a big payday for scammers.

How to Check and Stop These Deductions

  1. Check for active subscriptions:
    • MTN Ghana: Dial *175# → 1 (Content Services).
    • Telecel Ghana: Dial *463#.
    • AirtelTigo: Dial *100# → My Account → Content Services.
  2. Contact customer service if deductions continue.
Call 100 on MTN, Telecel, or AirtelTigo for assistance.
  3. Report the shortcode to your telecom provider if you suspect fraud.

How to Protect Your Airtime Going Forward

  • Avoid clicking on online pop-ups, “free gift” ads, or random SMS links.
  • Never share your phone number on unknown sites or competitions.
  • Read prompts carefully before replying “YES” or “OK.”
  • Regularly monitor your prepaid balance for suspicious deductions.

Stay Alert

These scams thrive because they look official and charge small amounts. But every deduction counts — and it’s your money at stake.

Always check, unsubscribe, and report. Protect your airtime the same way you protect your wallet.
