WhatsApp Web group calls — WhatsApp Web is finally getting group calls, so you can leave your phone on your

WhatsApp is rolling out group calls to its web version, which means you can finally video-conference on your laptop or desktop without needing your phone plugged in nearby.

The feature is live for beta testers now and will roll out to more users over the coming weeks. Here’s what that means for you.

What’s changing with WhatsApp Web group calls?

Until now, WhatsApp Web let you make one-on-one calls but forced you to use your phone for group calls. That’s annoying if you’re working at your desk and your phone is charging in another room.

The update adds group video and voice calls to WhatsApp Web, with the same features you get on your phone:

  • Up to 32 people in one call
  • Screen sharing during video calls
  • Call links (share a unique URL to invite people)
  • Waiting room option (control who joins)

All calls are encrypted end-to-end using the Signal protocol, so your conversation stays private by default.

Why this matters for Ghanaian remote workers and students

If you work or study from home and join Zoom or Google Meet for classes or client calls, WhatsApp Web group calls offer an alternative that doesn’t drain your phone battery. You stay on your laptop the whole time.

This is especially helpful if your phone is old or your battery doesn’t last long during the workday. Keep your phone for calls and messages; run your group meetings on the web version instead.

Linux users get the biggest win here. WhatsApp doesn’t make a desktop app for Linux, so Linux users had to switch to their phone every time someone called a group. Now they can stay in their browser.

When will you get it?

Right now, only WhatsApp beta testers have access. WhatsApp says the rollout will continue over the coming weeks, but the company hasn’t given a specific date for everyone else.

If you want to try it early, you can join the WhatsApp Web beta program, but most users will need to wait.

What you should do

If you’re a heavy WhatsApp user and your phone runs low on battery during work, keep an eye on your WhatsApp Web for the group call button. It’ll appear once the rollout reaches your account.

For now, Zoom and Google Meet remain the go-to for Ghanaian remote teams, but this update gives WhatsApp another reason to stay on your desktop during the workday.
