Ghana’s telecom giant, Vodafone has partnered with social network company Facebook to launch its affordable Wi-Fi program. The campaign named the Express Wi-Fi program aims to deliver affordable internet connectivity to locations in the Ghana that are underserved.
The Express Wi-Fi program will enable retail entrepreneurs offer affordable and fast internet services in their localities. This project has already been launched and it is ongoing in Kenya, Nigeria Tanzania and Indonesia.
According to the National Communications Authority’s (NCA) website, data penetration rate in the country is 80.3%. Still, there is a huge number of Ghanaians who are not privilege to afford access to data because of the cost.
This partnership plans to revolutionise an industry which is already on its way to build a data dominant sub-region. Already, Vodafone has set up hotspots in Accra for the program. James Town, Nima, Pig Farm, Abossey Okai, Maamobi

At the launch, CEO of Vodafone Ghana said, “It is certainly a demonstration of our strategy in action. We remain committed to making sure every Ghanaian becomes a part of the data revolution, which currently represents the next stage of growth in this age of technological dominance.”
“Affordability remains an issue for users in the underserved regions of the country, despite their high demand for data, and this initiative is the answer.”
Appreciations from Communications Ministry
Also at the launch was the Deputy Minister for Communications, Vincent Sowah Odotei. The Deputy Minister applauded Vodafone for this praiseworthy step to launch the “Vodafone express WIFI by Facebook” in Ghana.
Mr Odotei said this move was a way of supporting “government’s digitalisation efforts to bring connectivity to unserved areas”.
“This is part of the government’s digital agenda and it is something that the ministry is encouraging other private sector companies to do.”
Vodafone Express WIFI by Facebook
The Vodafone Express WIFI by Facebook technology is available for Android and iOS phones, tablets and laptops. People can access this service by connecting to any available 200 hotspots within Accra without switching SIM cards.
Finally, Express Wi-Fi data packs are available. As Joy FM Online reported, customers can get them from accredited Vodafone Express Wi-Fi Retailer in the selected locations.
