What is a Game controller?

A video game controller is a peripheral device designed to be connected to a computer or console gaming system. It has multiple buttons and may have one or two mini joysticks. Basically, the gamepad is used for playing video games of many types, including sports, first-person shooters, role-playing, and others.

They are the primary peripheral device used on console gaming systems like the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. Some portable gaming systems have a gamepad built into the gaming device itself, like the Sony PSP. Whiles, some gamepads are also made to work with a computer, typically featuring a USB connection.

The first gamepad was introduced in 1985, first by Nintendo, then by Sega, for use with their video gaming systems.

Some types of video game controllers

Game controllers come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Controllers have evolved to include directional pads, multiple buttons, analogue sticks, joysticks, motion detection, touch screens and a plethora of other features.

Motion Controllers

A motion controller is a type of game controller that uses accelerometers or other sensors to track motion and provide input. Light Harp invented by Assaf Gurner, read the player’s physical movements and was the first controller to allow full-body motion sensing.

Nintendo’s Wii system released in 2006 utilizes the Wii Remote controller, which uses accelerometers to detect its approximate orientation and acceleration and an image sensor, so it can be used as a pointing device.

The Sixaxis, DualShock 3, and PlayStation Move controllers for Sony’s PlayStation3 system all have similar motion sensing capabilities. Microsoft released the Kinect for the Xbox 360 in 2010. This motion-sensing controller uses cameras to track a player’s movement. Microsoft released an improved version of the Kinect with the launch of the Xbox One.

Joy Stick

A joystick is an input device that allows the user to control a character or machine in a computer program, such as a plane in a flight simulator.

They look similar to the control device you would find on an arcade game. They always include extra buttons for additional functionality.

This is a peripheral that consists of a handheld stick that can be tilted around either of two axes and (sometimes) twisted around a third.  The picture below shows an example of Joystick.

In addition, the first joystick was invented at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory by C. B. Mirick and patented in 1926. It was a two-axis electronic joystick, similar to the joysticks in use today, and was originally designed for remotely piloted aircraft.

Paddle

paddle is a controller that features a round wheel and one or more fire buttons. The wheel is typically used to control the movement of the player or of an object along one axis of the video screen. History says it is the first analogue controllers and they lost popularity when “paddle and ball” type games fell out of favour.

An example is the Atari driving controller that appeared on the Atari 2600 designed for the game Indy 500. The picture shows an example of a game paddle used with the Atari 2600.

Touch Screen

A touch screen input allows the user to interact with the computer by touching the display screen. The first attempt at a handheld game console with touchscreen controls was Sega’s intended successor to the Game Gear.

The first released console to use a touchscreen was the Tiger game.com in 1997. Nintendo popularized it for use in video games with the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS. The controller for Nintendo’s Wii U console, the Wii U gamepad, features an inbuilt touchscreen.
