The beauty of programming languages is that if you are dedicated and determined, there is no reason you can’t learn from home. To really excel though it’s highly recommended to participate in a variety of different courses to hone your skills.

1. Strong Programming Language Skills
First of all, and this point is pretty much an obvious thing to point out but you’d be surprised how many app developers lack this, is strong programming skills. Ideally, you’ll have a good knowledge base and ability to program in multiple different languages. It’s all well and good being a master in Java but if you can add C++, PHP, C#, Xcode, Python and an array of others to your arsenal then you’ll definitely stand out from the crowd. You’ll also be able to implement a much higher level of quality into your products.
2. Cross-Platform Skills
When you’re first getting involved in the industry you might focus on learning how to develop for one specific device, for example, Apple. If you can further your skills and learn how to develop for multiple platforms, you’ll be able to develop apps for Apple, Android, Windows and anything else with a marketplace.
The importance of cross-platform development skills is growing higher every single day so if you can add this to your portfolio of abilities, employers will take you much more seriously and you’ll be able to improve the visibility and potential success of your apps.
3. User Experience and User Interface Skills
There are so many apps being released every single day that in order for yours to have a chance of success, they really need to stand out and be something special. The best way to achieve this (other than actually having a good idea of course) is to master the art of creating an excellent user experience with a smooth, fluid interface that is easy to navigate.
Training and improving your user experience and user interface skills will help top you off as one of the best in the business.
Improving Your Chances of Success
There are many more skills that you can build upon to truly become a great app developer, but those three are the minimum you should aim for in order to showcase yourself to employers.
But let’s say you are developing an app for yourself or with a few friends but you’ve heard all these horror stories about people who have devoted months and months to projects, only for them to flop hard in the app markets.
There’s a couple of things you can do to ensure you have the best possible chance of success and it all starts with a minimum viable product. The idea is that you create an app which is in working order, but it doesn’t need all of the bells and whistles you have in mind for it.
Sure, you can implement those really cool features down the line but to start with you want to create a basic app which gives users an idea of what you are trying to do with it.
Make sure it works, make sure it isn’t ugly but don’t worry about not having every single feature added to it. Then release it either worldwide or to a select demographic and begin collecting information. Information, after all, is one of the most important aspects of app development.
You can analyze the data you get, tweak and perfect your app and then release updates. Or if you find that nobody is interested in your idea at all, you can evolve it to go in a different direction. Only now, rather than having spent half a year creating it, you’ve saved yourself the trouble and you won’t have to restart from the ground up.
Being a great app developer is hard and the industry is incredibly competitive. Constantly look for ways you can improve your skills and always try and get feedback on your idea in progress.
