why NCA fined MTN Ghana GHS 100,000

This week hasn’t been good for MTN Ghana, though the company made a change in its system to satisfy customers. It didn’t go well at all. Just yesterday, the National Communications Authority (NCA) announced that it has fined MTN an amount of GHS 100,000.

But why would the communications regulatory body sanctioned MTN when it fixed the problem.

The main reason for the fine is MTN didn’t notify the Authority of its system change. A deadline was given and MTN still didn’t submit the report. Thus, MTN Ghana has been as follows:

  • GHS 50,000 for:
    • failing to notify the NCA of its new data packages and the challenges that came with it
    • challenges faced by its customers due to changes in data packages
  • GHS 50,000 for:
    • failing to notify the NCA and customers of the inaccessibility of MTN’s Customer Care lines.
  • GHS 10,000 for failing to submit a report by December 4, 2019. This fine is per day till MTN submits the report.

These fines are supposed to be paid by the close of Monday, December 9, 2019.
