MOVE: Efficient USSD based payment platform for people on the go

MOVE: The USSD based payment platform for people on the go, fintech

In recent years, the fintech ecosystem of Ghana’s finance sector has experienced some significant development and growth. This is due to efforts made by state institutions as well as private entities — many of whom have developed platforms, to facilitate payments and close transactions. One of such is MOVE – a USSD based platform that allows you to send money as well as pay bills directly from your mobile wallet.

Launched in 2016, MOVE is Ghana’s first interoperability platform. It allowed users to make money transfers across all networks simply by dialing the *718# code to get started – years before the GHIPSS brought in the mobile money interoperability that we know of now.

Ease Of Use

MOVE prioritizes ease of use as one of the main features of the platform. This is aimed at enabling late adopters of technology to find it easy to navigate around, while remaining appealing to the tech savvy.

For many of such platforms, accessing the service is dependent on you downloading an app or registering an account. Aside the extra data cost that downloading an app would incur, this process can be cumbersome especially when you’re on the go and internet speeds are not in your favor.

With the USSD based service of MOVE, however, there will be no data cost as there’s no need for any downloads. This limits the customer’s cost for using the service; as all they’ll need to do is to dial the code (*718#) and set MOVE in motion.

With MOVE, You Can

  • Make mobile money transfers across all the local telecom platforms (MTN, Vodafone, AirtelTigo).
  • Purchase airtime and data bundles for all the networks and service providers such as Surfline directly from MOVE.
  • Pay subscription service (DSTV, GO TV) bills as well as utility (PDS, and Ghana Water Company) bills.
  • Save and manage contacts of your regular vendors for easy transfers and payments.
  • Verify receiving wallets on MTN and AirtelTigo.

It is worth noting also, that although MOVE is primarily a USSD based platform, it has a mobile app for those who are so inclined. You can visit the Google PlayStore to download the app.

Challenges

Fraudulent transactions are an issue that poses a challenge across most of the payment platforms. MOVE has access to a fraud center with which they are able to monitor and to an extent mitigate the risk of fraud on their platform, however, inaccurate customer data on mobile wallets because of registering with false credentials remains a major challenge to be solved.

In Conclusion

The simplicity of MOVE makes it the ideal platform for people on the go, who want to perform their desired transactions as quickly as possible. Over the number of years that the platform has been in operation, it has observed one truth in the service provision space; that value and convenience is what consumers everywhere are focused on. Hence, they are inclined to go where the value they seek can be provided. This truth has been their guide as they make strides into the future.
