Meta Introduces Message Translations Feature on WhatsApp

Meta is making it easier for WhatsApp users to chat across languages with a brand-new message translations feature. The update allows you to translate texts instantly within the app, breaking down barriers for WhatsApp’s 3 billion users across 180+ countries.

How It Works

Using the new feature is straightforward:

  • Long-press on a message and tap Translate.
  • Select the language you want to translate from or to.
  • Once downloaded, the language will be saved for future translations.

This function works in private chats, groups, and Channel updates.

For Android users, there’s also an option to enable automatic translations for an entire chat thread, so every incoming message is instantly translated.

Privacy Protected

Meta says translations are handled on your device, not on WhatsApp’s servers, ensuring that your private conversations remain secure and inaccessible to third parties.

Availability

The rollout has begun in phases:

  • Android: Available in six languages — English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic.
  • iPhone: Launching with support for 19+ languages.

More languages will be added soon.

Why It Matters

From family chats with relatives abroad to cross-border business deals, WhatsApp’s new translation tool makes communication smoother. By keeping it free, private, and built-in, Meta is strengthening WhatsApp’s position as the world’s most relied-upon messaging app.
