Kenya and Nigeria Partner to Expand Broadband Access Nigeria’s Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) and the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) have entered a new partnership aimed at boosting broadband connectivity and strengthening Africa’s digital future.
The agreement was sealed during a visit by Hillary Kipkosgey, Director General of KSA, to NIGCOMSAT’s Ground Control Station in Abuja, where both sides committed to deeper cooperation in satellite technology.
Expanding Digital Access
Through the partnership, Kenya will leverage NIGCOMSAT’s satellite capabilities to improve broadband coverage across key sectors such as:
- Education
- Defence
- Healthcare
- Financial technology (fintech)
- Governance
According to NIGCOMSAT’s Managing Director, Jane Egerton-Idehen, the collaboration is about more than just connectivity.
“This collaboration goes beyond connectivity; it aims at developing robust systems that protect sovereignty, enhance security, and ensure Africa secures its rightful position in the global space industry,” she said.
Strengthening Africa’s Space Ambitions
Nigeria has been a leader in satellite technology on the continent, and the partnership with Kenya aligns with its mission to use space innovation for socioeconomic development.
NIGCOMSAT expects to generate around US$5.4 million in revenue over the next three years while expanding broadband reach across Africa.
Kenya’s Hillary Kipkosgey stressed the importance of continuous cooperation, noting that both nations need “deeper collaboration and more frequent discussions” to achieve Africa’s collective digital goals.
The deal is expected to bring:
- Wider broadband coverage in Kenya.
- Stronger regional security through satellite systems.
- Improved alignment in satellite governance across Africa.
By working together, Nigeria and Kenya are not only expanding internet access but also setting the stage for Africa to reduce its reliance on foreign satellite services and build a stronger digital economy.
