Is LG making a 16-lens smartphone camera? Leaked patent suggests, this may be a future phone.
Leaked LG patent hints at a 16-lens smartphone camera.
We all do agree that phone cameras are a race for smartphone makers these years. Well, LG might be looking to take this race to a whole new level. A leaked patent, belonging to LG, suggests the company might build a smartphone with a crazy 16 lens camera feature.
As this revelation comes from LetsGoDigital, multiple camera lenses isn’t really news. Over the last year, phones with two and three rear lenses have been released onto market. There’s also been rumours of a five-lens Nokia device, and also a “potential nine-camera smartphone prototype from the multi-lens startup Light”: the Verge. But LG may be looking to move far beyond that with its 16 lenses.

Chaim Gartenberg in an article on The Verge says, “Unlike most multiple-camera systems, though — including ones like LG’s V40 ThinQ, which offered different types of camera lenses for different effects on the same shot — the goal of the multiple cameras seems to be to offer different angles on a scene using the perspective of the different lenses.”
For now, we can’t confirm that LG is actually making the phone but there’s still time to make it a reality.
From the patent, the 16-lens camera would be able to use the different datasets from the different lenses to cut out things from the image. For example, things like portrait mode or even replacing a background entirely.
The patent also says the camera will combine the different camera angles to create a miniature film, something like a better version Apple’s Live Photos.
We will be excited to welcome this kind of smartphone, especially to know what other features it possess. For now it seems we’d have to enjoy our double and triple camera lenses.
