Android anti-theft protection — How to turn on Android’s anti-theft protection features and secure your phone

Phone theft is a real problem in Ghana. If your Android device gets stolen, a thief can factory reset it, drain your bank apps, or sell it on. But Google built anti-theft tools into recent Android versions that can lock down your phone, track it, and protect your data — if you know how to turn them on.

Here’s what you need to do right now to secure your device.

1. Set up a PIN, pattern, or password

This is your first line of defence. When you set up a new Android phone, you’ll be asked to create a lock screen PIN, pattern, or password. If you skipped it, go to Settings > Security and privacy > Device unlock and add one now.

Without this, anyone who picks up your phone can access everything — your email, banking apps, photos, contacts.

Pro tip: If your phone has fingerprint or face unlock, set that up too. But you still need a PIN or password as a backup — biometric unlock only works after you restart your phone and enter your PIN first.

2. Turn on Identity Check

Go to Settings > Security and privacy > Device unlock > Theft protection (Samsung users: look for “Lost device protection” instead).

Tap Identity Check and toggle it on. This lets you set trusted places like home or work. If your phone is used outside those places, it will demand biometric verification (fingerprint or face) — so a thief can’t use it even if they have your PIN.

You can also require your Google account password and screen lock as extra verification steps.

3. Enable auto-lock settings

Still in Theft protection, turn on these three:

  • Theft Detection Lock: Automatically locks your phone if it senses sudden movement (like being grabbed and run away with)
  • Offline Device Lock: Locks your phone if it loses internet. Thieves often take phones offline to stop tracking
  • Failed authentication lock: Locks your phone if someone enters your password wrong too many times in banking apps or settings

On OnePlus and Oppo phones, there’s also a SIM lock option that locks the device if someone removes your SIM card.

4. Set up Google Find Hub

If it’s not already installed on your device, you can download Google Find Hub from the Play Store. The app helps you locate and secure your device if it goes missing.

Google Find Hub is designed to work similarly to other device tracking services, allowing you to take action when your phone is lost or stolen.

What to do now

Check all these settings on your phone today. Make sure they’re enabled and your phone is connected to Find Hub. These features won’t stop theft, but they’ll protect your data and give you a fighting chance to lock down or track a stolen device.

If you haven’t set a strong PIN or password yet, do that first — it’s the simplest and most critical step.
