Grammy awards winners, nominees used to disguise malware attacks:
A cybersecurity firm, Kaspersky have found 30,982 malware files disguised as Grammy Award-nominated artists. According to them, 9,722 malicious softwares have actually been distributed in Nigeria disguised as Billie Eilish songs.
Kaspersky revealed that Nigeria saw 94,630 attacks recorded from the files distributed in total. Popular singers, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Post Malone have also been detected as names used to capture innocent victims who download the malware via music and video files, especially via suspicious sites.
Kaspersky security analyst Anton Ivanov, had this to say, “Cybercriminals understand what is popular and always strive to capitalise on that. Music, alongside TV shows, is one of the most popular types of entertainment and, as a result, an attractive means to spread malware, which criminals readily use.”
“As we see more and more users subscribe to streaming platforms, which do not require file download in order to listen to music, we expect that malicious activity related to this type of content will decrease.”
