Google has revealed its picks for the best apps of the year 2018. Among these awarded apps are five apps which Google says are “hidden gems.”
Google’s “hidden gem” apps of the year range from an app for recording your dreams to an app for finding pen pals.
This is how Google described these apps: “These apps are new to the scene and quietly building a fan base – from newcomers on the brink of getting big to our favourite niche platforms.”
This is an app for finding pen pals. It lets you match with people interested in becoming pen pal. The app is trying to bring the old ways back. You’ll letters through mail, while the app only creates the connections.
This is the company had to say about the app:
“The app is created for those who yearns for meaningful conversations with people in the era of instant messaging. We hope to connect people around the world at a slower but better pace – one letter at a time.”
Slowly is free to download and use, get it on Google Play Store.
This app is used for creating minimalist story collages. Unfold has a number of templates for creating your photo collages.
Here’s what the company says about the app:
“Unfold is a toolkit for storytellers. Create beautiful and engaging stories with minimal and elegant templates.”

3. Just a Line
Just a Line is an app for drawing in augmented reality (AR). With Just a Line, you create drawings overlaid on things you see in real life.
Here’s how the company described Just a Line:
“Just a Line is an AR Experiment that lets you make simple drawings in augmented reality, then share your creation with a short video. Draw on your own or with a friend, then hit record and share what you made with #justaline.”
Just a Line is also a free app. You can download and use from the Google Play Store.
This app may seem a little weird – a dream diary app. It lets you record your dreams and lucid thoughts. Weird, right? In case you talk in your sleep, Luci has this noise-activated sleep recorder which will record sleep talks.
Here’s how the company defined the app:
“Hello, I’m Luci! I’m your lucid dream helper. Lucid dreaming is when you become aware that you’re in a dream; this awareness allows you to take control over your dreams …”
Luci is a paid app, costs GH₵6. Get it on Google’s Play Store.
5. Learn Spanish with Lirica
As the name suggests, it is for learning the Spanish language, but in an interesting way. The app lets you learn Spanish through Spanish-language music.
It teaches you the Spanish language and its grammar through Latin music.
The company’s (Lirica) remarks on the app:
“Choose music from current Latin Superstars like Nicky Jam or Classic Artists like Elvis Crespo and learn Spanish vocabulary and grammar through their songs.”
Learn Spanish with Lirica is free to use. Download it on Google PlayStore.
