The dvla renewal process for your Ghana driver’s license requires GHS 50 to GHS 160 (April 2026) depending on your license category, a valid roadworthy certificate if renewing a commercial class, and a visit to any DVLA regional office or one of the express centers now operating in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi. Most renewals take 30 to 90 minutes if you bring the correct documents, though first-time renewals after expiry can stretch to three hours due to biometric re-capture and payment queue delays.

This guide walks you through every step of the DVLA license renewal process as of April 2026, covers fees by license class, lists required documents, flags common rejection reasons, and explains the roadworthy exemption rule that trips up thousands of private car drivers each year.

TL;DR

  • Renewal costs GHS 50 (April 2026) for Class B (private car), GHS 80 (April 2026) for Class D (motorcycle), GHS 160 (April 2026) for commercial classes
  • You need your current license (even if expired), Ghana Card, and roadworthy certificate (commercial only, valid within 12 months)
  • Renewal is valid 1 year for commercial licenses, 5 years for private (Class A, B, C)
  • You can renew up to 90 days before expiry without penalty
  • Expired licenses under 3 years can renew directly; expired beyond 3 years require a fresh application and road test

Who Needs to Renew a Driver’s License

Every driver’s license issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Ghana has an expiry date printed on the front. Class A, B, and C licenses (private vehicles) expire after 5 years. Class D, E, F, G, and H licenses (commercial and specialized vehicles) expire after 1 year.

Driving with an expired license is an offense under Road Traffic Regulation 2012 (L.I. 2180). Police and Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) officers can issue a fixed penalty notice of GHS 180 (April 2026) and impound your vehicle until you produce a valid license.

Your license enters “renewable” status 90 days before the printed expiry date. DVLA does not send renewal reminders by SMS or email. You track the date yourself or risk driving illegally.

DVLA Renewal Fees (2026)

DVLA updated its fee structure in January 2026. All fees include biometric card printing.

Required Documents for DVLA Renewal

Bring originals and one photocopy of each:

  1. Current driver’s license (the physical card, even if expired)
  2. Ghana Card (national ID issued by NIA)
  3. Roadworthy certificate (if renewing Class D, E, F, G, or H). Certificate must be dated within 12 months of your renewal date. Private car drivers (Class B, C) do not need roadworthy for renewal, only for initial application.
  4. Proof of address (utility bill, rent agreement, or employer letter showing your current residential address). DVLA cross-checks this against your Ghana Card address. If they differ, bring both.

If your license expired more than 3 years ago, DVLA treats you as a new applicant. You must pass the written road signs test and practical driving test again. In this case, add:

  • Passport-size photos (2 copies)
  • Medical report from a licensed physician (valid 6 months)
  • Eye test report from an optometrist

Step-by-Step DVLA Renewal Process

Step 1: Confirm Your License Class and Expiry Date

Check the front of your license. The expiry date is printed below your photo in DD/MM/YYYY format. The class letter (A through H) is printed in the top-right corner.

If you hold multiple classes (e.g. B and D), you renew both on the same card. Pay the higher fee (in this case GHS 80 (April 2026) for D) and both classes extend.

Step 2: Get a Roadworthy Certificate (Commercial Drivers Only)

Commercial license holders (D, E, F, G, H) must present a valid roadworthy certificate issued by an authorized testing station. The certificate is valid 12 months from issue date.

Testing stations are listed at dvlaghana.gov.gh/roadworthy-stations. Cost is GHS 50 to GHS 80 (April 2026) depending on vehicle size. Inspection takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Private car drivers renewing Class B or C do not need roadworthy. This is the single most common misunderstanding. Thousands of Ghanaians waste time and money getting roadworthy tests they do not need. See our Roadworthy Certificate Renewal guide for full details.

Step 3: Visit a DVLA Office

DVLA operates 16 regional offices plus 3 express centers. Accra Head Office (37 Starlets Road, Ring Road Central) is open Monday to Friday 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Regional offices keep the same hours.

Express centers in Accra Mall, Kumasi City Mall, and Takoradi Harbour Mall offer faster service (15 to 45 minute turnaround) at a GHS 20 (April 2026) premium. Total cost for Class B at an express center is GHS 70 (April 2026).

Arrive before 9:00 AM to avoid mid-morning queues. Friday afternoons see the longest wait times.

Step 4: Document Verification

At the verification desk, a DVLA officer checks your documents against DVLA’s database. They confirm:

  • Your Ghana Card number matches the license record
  • Your license is not flagged for suspension or court order
  • Your photo and biometric thumbprint match

If your address changed, the officer updates it in the system. If your name changed (marriage, deed poll), bring your marriage certificate or change-of-name certificate. DVLA will not process a renewal if the names do not match.

Processing time: 5 to 15 minutes if documents are correct.

Step 5: Payment

After verification, you receive a payment slip. Take it to the cashier or MoMo payment desk. Pay the exact fee for your license class.

DVLA issues a receipt. Keep this receipt. If your card is not ready on the promised date, the receipt is your proof of payment.

Step 6: Biometric Capture

At the biometric station, DVLA captures:

  • Both thumbprints (left and right)
  • Photo (remove glasses, no hat, neutral expression)
  • Signature (digital pad)

This step is required even if you renewed within the last 5 years. DVLA policy mandates fresh biometrics at every renewal to combat card fraud.

Processing time: 3 to 8 minutes per person.

Step 7: Card Collection

DVLA prints cards on-site at regional offices. Standard processing is same-day (2 to 4 hours after biometrics). If you arrive after 2:00 PM, collection is the next working day.

Express centers print cards in 15 to 45 minutes. You wait in the lounge.

Your new card shows the updated expiry date. The card number remains the same. If DVLA issues a new number, they will explain why (usually a system migration or duplicate record correction).

Ghana-Specific Considerations

Roadworthy Confusion Costs Drivers Time and Money

Private car drivers (Class B, C) do not need a roadworthy certificate for renewal. Yet DVLA offices in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi report that 30% of Class B renewal applicants arrive with roadworthy certificates they paid GHS 50 to GHS 80 (April 2026) for.

The confusion stems from two sources:

  1. Roadworthy is required for initial application of any class. Many drivers assume it is required every time.
  2. Some testing stations mislead drivers, claiming roadworthy is mandatory for all renewals. They profit from the test fee.

DVLA clarified this in a public notice dated March 2024. Private car drivers renewing a valid or recently expired Class B or C license do not need roadworthy. Full policy: DVLA Online Services in Ghana

Mobile Money Fees Add Up

Paying via MoMo at DVLA offices incurs standard MoMo transfer fees. For a GHS 50 (April 2026) Class B renewal, MTN MoMo charges GHS 0.50 (April 2026) (1% fee capped at GHS 10). Telecel Cash charges GHS 1.00 (April 2026) (flat fee for transactions under GHS 100).

If you renew every 5 years and pay via Telecel Cash, you pay GHS 1 (April 2026) extra per renewal. Over 20 years (4 renewals), that is GHS 4 (April 2026) in fees. Paying cash avoids this.

Expired Beyond 3 Years Requires Full Re-Test

If your license expired more than 3 years ago (1,095 days), DVLA treats you as a new applicant. You must:

  • Pass the written road signs and rules test (40 multiple-choice questions, 70% pass mark)
  • Pass the practical driving test (45-minute circuit + road test with a DVLA examiner)

Test fees are GHS 30 (April 2026) (written) and GHS 100 (April 2026) (practical). Total cost for a Class B driver re-testing after 3+ years expiry: GHS 180 (April 2026) (tests) + GHS 50 (April 2026) (card) = GHS 230 (April 2026).

Moral: renew on time.

DVLA Does Not Offer Online Renewal Yet

As of April 2026, DVLA does not offer online license renewal. All renewals require an in-person visit. DVLA’s website dvlaghana.gov.gh lists fees and office locations but does not process applications.

Several fake websites and Facebook pages claim to offer “online DVLA renewal” for GHS 100 to GHS 200 (April 2026). These are scams. DVLA does not accept online payment for renewals. Do not send money via MoMo to any individual claiming to be a DVLA agent.

Common Rejection Reasons

DVLA officers reject renewal applications for these reasons:

  1. Ghana Card expired or suspended. Your Ghana Card must be valid. If NIA suspended your card (e.g. for failing to update biometrics), DVLA will not process your renewal. Resolve the Ghana Card issue first. See our Ghana Card guide.

  2. Name mismatch. Your license name must match your Ghana Card name. If you changed your name via marriage or deed poll, bring the certificate.

  3. License flagged for court order. If a court suspended your license (e.g. for a traffic offense), you must clear the suspension before renewing. DVLA cannot override a court order.

  4. Commercial license without roadworthy. Class D, E, F, G, H drivers must present a roadworthy certificate dated within 12 months. No exceptions.

  5. Expired beyond 3 years without test results. If your license expired more than 3 years ago, you must pass the written and practical tests before renewing. DVLA will not process your application until you present passing test slips.

FAQs

Can I renew my license before it expires?

Yes. DVLA allows renewal up to 90 days before expiry. Your new expiry date is calculated from the original expiry date, not the renewal date. For example, if your Class B license expires on 31 December 2026 and you renew on 1 October 2026, your new expiry date is 31 December 2031 (5 years from 2026, not from 2031).

What if I lost my driver’s license card?

You apply for a replacement, not a renewal. The process and fees differ. See our guide: How to Replace a Lost Driver’s License

Can I renew at any DVLA office or only where I applied?

You can renew at any of the 16 regional offices or 3 express centers. DVLA’s database is centralized. You do not need to return to the office where you first applied.

Do I need a new passport photo for renewal?

No. DVLA captures your photo digitally during the biometric step. You do not bring printed photos for renewal (only for fresh applications after 3+ years expiry).

How long is a renewed license valid?

Class A, B, C licenses are valid 5 years from the new issue date. Class D, E, F, G, H licenses are valid 1 year. The expiry date is printed on your new card.

Can I use my old license while waiting for the new card?

No. Once you pay the renewal fee and complete biometrics, DVLA marks your old card as “expired in system.” If police stop you, your old card will not validate. DVLA issues a temporary paper receipt valid 7 days. If your card is not ready within 7 days, return to DVLA for an extension slip.

What if I hold a foreign driver’s license and live in Ghana?

Foreign licenses are valid in Ghana for 12 months from your arrival date. After 12 months, you must convert to a Ghana license. Conversion is not a renewal. See: Foreign Driver’s License in Ghana: Validity

Is a medical report required for renewal?

No, unless your license expired more than 3 years ago. Standard renewals (on time or within 3 years of expiry) do not require a medical report. Only fresh applications require medical and eye test reports.

Closing

DVLA processes 200,000 to 250,000 license renewals each year. Most delays stem from missing documents (especially roadworthy confusion among private car drivers) or expired Ghana Cards. Bring the correct documents, arrive early, and the process takes under 90 minutes.

DVLA plans to pilot online renewal for Class B licenses in late 2026, starting with Accra and Kumasi residents. The pilot will require Ghana Card authentication and mobile money payment. No launch date confirmed yet.
