The Bank of Ghana’s 2025 complaints report highlights a clear pattern: digital fraud and card disputes are among the top banking complaints from Ghanaian customers.

If you use a bank card online, send money via mobile banking, or rely on digital payments, this matters to you. Here’s what you need to know.

What the report found

According to the Bank of Ghana, digital fraud and card-related disputes topped the list of banking complaints in 2025. This means Ghanaians lost money or got stuck fighting with their banks over fraudulent transactions more than most other issues.

Card disputes come in many forms: a charge you didn’t make, a card cloned without your knowledge, or money taken from your account without permission.

Why this matters to you

If these are top complaints, it means the problem is widespread. You are not alone if you’ve had your card details stolen or spotted a suspicious charge on your statement.

The good news: knowing the risks helps you avoid them.

How to protect yourself

  • Guard your card details. Never share your full card number, CVV (the 3-digit code on the back), or PIN over email, SMS, or phone—even if someone claims to be from your bank.
  • Use secure connections. Only enter card details on websites that start with “https://” (the “s” means secure). Avoid shopping or banking on public Wi-Fi without a VPN.
  • Check your statements regularly. Log into your bank app or website at least weekly and look for charges you don’t recognize. Report them immediately.
  • Enable transaction alerts. Most banks let you turn on SMS or app notifications for every card swipe. This catches fraud fast.
  • Keep your phone safe. If your phone is the gateway to your bank app, lock it with a strong password or biometric (fingerprint/face ID). Don’t download apps from unofficial sources.
  • Dispute quickly. If you spot fraud, call your bank right away—don’t wait. Check with your bank about their specific dispute filing window.

What to do if you’re hit by fraud

Don’t panic. Report it to your bank immediately. Contact your bank to understand their investigation and resolution process for fraud claims.

Keep records of everything: the fraudulent transaction, your dispute report number, and all communication with your bank.

The bigger picture

The fact that the Bank of Ghana is tracking these complaints means the regulator is watching. Banks that fail to handle disputes fairly face penalties.

But the job of staying safe starts with you. The more Ghanaians who protect their details and report fraud, the harder it becomes for scammers to operate.

What to do now: Check your last three months of bank and card statements for anything odd. If you find suspicious charges, contact your bank today. And if you haven’t already, enable transaction alerts on your account.
