ChatGPT overhaul — ChatGPT is getting an overhaul because ‘Chat is dead’

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is completely redesigning the app you’ve been using. The reason? They need to make more money.

If you use ChatGPT for free in Ghana, this matters because the changes will start pushing you toward paid features over the next few weeks. Here’s what’s coming and what you should know.

ChatGPT is becoming more than just a chatbot

For the past few years, ChatGPT has been a straightforward tool: you type a question, it gives you an answer. That’s changing.

OpenAI now sees ChatGPT as a gateway, not a destination. The company wants to use it to introduce you to other paid products, like coding tools and image generators.

The biggest shift is toward AI agents. Think of an agent as a smarter assistant that doesn’t just answer questions, but actually does tasks for you. It might book flights, organize your calendar, or write code without you asking for it step-by-step.

One senior OpenAI employee summed it up bluntly: “Chat is dead.” By that, they mean the age of simple question-and-answer chatbots is ending.

Why is OpenAI doing this?

ChatGPT has nearly 1 billion users worldwide. But here’s the problem for OpenAI: most of you use it for free.

The company is preparing for a public stock listing (IPO) and needs to show investors it can make real money. Right now, only businesses pay a meaningful amount. OpenAI wants to change that.

Currently, 40% of OpenAI’s revenue comes from businesses. They’re targeting 50% by the end of 2026. The free users—that’s most of us—will be nudged toward paid tools.

What will actually change for you?

Over the coming weeks, both the ChatGPT website and mobile app will be redesigned. You’ll see new prompts and suggestions steering you toward paid features like:

  • Codex (a tool that writes computer code for you)
  • Image generation tools
  • Apps built by partners

The redesign will also introduce AI agents that can handle tasks across your life, whether work-related or personal.

Free ChatGPT won’t disappear, but it will become more of a starting point, with paid upgrades positioned as the “better” experience.

What should Ghanaian users do?

If you’re happy with free ChatGPT for writing emails, homework help, or brainstorming, nothing forces you to upgrade immediately. The free version will still work.

But watch for the design changes when they roll out. If you see features you actually want, understand they’ll likely come with a cost (usually billed in USD via international payment methods, so budget for the exchange rate to GHS).

If you use ChatGPT professionally or for coding, pay attention to Codex updates, since that’s where OpenAI is investing heavily and where the new AI agent features will likely appear first.
