It was in the late 90s when people began to realize the value of online ads and why businesses should invest in various ad spaces to boost their online presence. As the number of advertisers increased, the need for online ad spaces also grew but for some reason, the two parties had a hard time finding each other.
Good thing the ad network entered the picture. To simplify things a bit, think of the ad network as the middleman, the one who bridges the gap and creates the connection between publishers and advertisers. An advertiser needs space to put their ads while publishers don’t only have ad spaces for their websites; they can also host these ads!
How It Works
The ad network scours through websites to search for advertising space that remains to be unsold. The search for advertisers looking for ad spaces follow suit and that’s where the partnership begins. All of the parties involved will benefit from an ad network. The advertiser settles fees whenever a site visitor or potential customer clicks on their ads. The publisher and the network receive a percentage of those fees. To give you an idea, for every one dollar that the advertiser pays with each click, the network receives thirty cents while the publisher receives seventy cents. All parties set the terms and fees to avoid complications in the future.
Types of Ad Networks
There are different types of ad networks, depending on how they function. For example, blind networks are the most affordable but the downside is, advertisers, don’t have a say when it comes to the placement of their ads. Vertical networks have traffic that’s better than the blind network, and ads can belong to any category so advertisers are given more freedom when it comes to choosing and placing their ads on the page. The most expensive type of ad network would have to be the targeted networks and for good reason. They consider the behaviour of the page visitors and context of the website before placing ads. What’s good about this is that there’s a specific target and advertisers are guaranteed that their potential customers will chance upon their ads. Now one must note that given the developments in technology, payments of the fees are no longer just limited to cash. Case in point would be the bitcoin advertising network where publishers receive bitcoins whenever there are valid clicks on their website. This is a good thing especially for those who are into cryptocurrencies.
