Body positivity is something that most people struggle with. In this age, social media has become a reason that most people hate themselves. You go on Instagram and all you see are picture perfect people and couples. But the truth is, most people only show their best sides on social media. And most of these photos you see of people with what you call “the ideal body” are photoshopped and face tuned.
Yet still, that doesn’t stop us from wishing we looked better than we do. We begin to wish we were what we are not and the minute you start doing that, you start losing confidence in yourself and this can even affect your self-esteem.
If this sounds like you, keep reading to find out how to be more body positive and boost your self-esteem and confidence.
5 steps to body positivity
1. Stop following people that make you feel bad about yourself
If your negative body image is as a result of following the lives of people on social media, then unfollow these people. Follow people who will help motivate you in life and add value to your life. Follow entrepreneurs. Follow motivational speakers. follow authors. Follow people who will increase your productivity and motivate you to do better in life.
2. Surround yourself with people who make you feel good
You are in charge of who you decide to be around. You get what you tolerate in life. If there are people around you who do not let you feel good about yourself, let them go. Be with people who accept you just the way you are.
3. Stop comparing yourself to others
If you want to have a healthy relationship with your body and be more body positive, then stop comparing yourself to others. Everyone is unique in their own way. So just don;t compare yourself to anyone at all.
4. Wear clothes that fit
Trust me, you will look better if you just wear clothes that fit perfectly. Don’t wear over sized clothes to make you seem big or clothes that are smaller in size in hopes that it will make you look thinner. It won’t! And you will just end up feeling awful about yourself because you don’t look good enough. Wear clothes in your size, clothes that fit perfectly and oh, take a lot of photos. Feel good about yourself.
5. Practice self-care
Work on yourself. Take care of yourself physically, emotionally and mentally. Make time for yourself. Pamper yourself. Buy yourself something pretty. Say nice things to yourself. Relax with some good music. Listen to inspiring songs. Read inspirational quotes. Eat right. Do pilates. Exercise. Just take care of yourself however you can.
Learn to love and accept yourself like you are. Don’t let society’s definition of beauty or what society deem as “the perfect body” affect the way you feel about yourself. Even society’s definition of beauty or “the perfcet body” changes over time. There was a time that thin girls were seen as the perfect body. But now the tables have turned in favour of thick girls. That’s girls with big boobs and booty. So who is to say that, that won’t also change in time. So do not let society affect the way you feel about yourself or the way you see yourself. Love yourself. You are beautiful.
