The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, has applauded the MTN Ghana Foundation for delivering a transformational expansion of the Accident and Emergency Block at Ho Teaching Hospital. Speaking at the handover ceremony on March 5, 2026, he hailed the GHS 15.4 million investment as a landmark achievement that significantly advances healthcare delivery in the region.

He noted that strengthening critical healthcare services is essential to the region’s development, describing the Foundation’s intervention as a remarkable philanthropic effort that aligns with the government’s vision to deliver quality healthcare to all Ghanaians.

At the ceremony, the Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, Adwoa Wiafe, reaffirmed MTN Ghana Foundation’s commitment to championing accessible healthcare for all. “Health is essential. It is everyone’s right, not just a privilege or a gift. We must all share in this responsibility,” she emphasized. She added that the newly expanded Accident and Emergency block, built to international standards, is designed to ease congestion, improve patient flow and enhance emergency response in the Volta Region.

Dr. Hintermann K. K. Mbroh, CEO of Ho Teaching Hospital, described the centre as a major boost to emergency care delivery. He highlighted the emergency department’s critical role as the hospital’s frontline for urgent cases, noting that the upgraded facilities will enable faster, more effective lifesaving interventions. Dr. Mbroh underscored the importance of strong public-private partnerships for healthcare advancement and commended the MTN Ghana Foundation for its dedication to advancing healthcare infrastructure.

The Chairman of the hospital’s board, Dr. Delanyo Dovlo, emphasized that the project marks a major milestone toward the hospital’s goal of becoming a centre of excellence for clinical care and medical training.

Lydia Aziato, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, called for continued collaboration to further expand specialised services, including cardiac and maternal health care. She also highlighted that strong infrastructure not only improves patient outcomes but also enhances the university’s mandate to train future healthcare professionals.

Inside the facility

The expanded 30-bed facility significantly boosts the hospital’s capacity to manage trauma cases, sudden illnesses and other life-threatening emergencies. It is equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, such as:
·        Patient and cardiac monitors
·        Portable ultrasound machines
·        Defibrillators with pacemaker capabilities
·        Electrocardiogram (ECG) machines
·        Ventilators
·        Arterial blood gas analyzers

Isolation Room

Other notable additions include haematology and biochemistry analyzers, blood storage refrigerators, infusion pumps, suction devices, crash carts, blood warmers, as well as hospital beds, stretchers and examination lamps. To ensure accessibility for critically ill patients and persons with disabilities, the facility also features an elevator.
 
The management of the Hospital was encouraged to prioritize the maintenance of the new facility to ensure it continues to deliver high-quality emergency care for a long time. The upgraded emergency center is expected to boost emergency care in the region, reduce referrals to other hospitals and significantly improve survival rates for patients in critical condition.

The MTN Ghana Foundation has a strong track record of supporting community development in the Volta Region. Past interventions include a 60-bed maternity and neonatal intensive care unit at Keta Municipal Hospital, upgrades to the Kpedze Health Centre and a potable water system for the Kpeve community. These projects underscore the Foundation’s commitment to strengthening healthcare and improving the well-being of communities across the country.
