South Africa Launches Its First AI Factory

South Africa has officially entered the next phase of its digital revolution with the launch of its first Artificial Intelligence (AI) Factory) by tech giant Altron. The new facility, powered by Nvidia’s AI infrastructure, is designed to fast-track innovation while keeping sensitive data within local borders.

Hosted at Teraco’s Nvidia AI-ready data centre, the AI Factory gives businesses access to enterprise-grade AI tools, consulting, and scalable cloud infrastructure. Early adopters — including Dataviue, Lelapa AI, and MathU — are already using the platform to train and deploy advanced AI models locally.

Altron says the project is built around a “local-first” approach, ensuring South African companies can innovate without relying on offshore data centres. The platform’s AI-as-a-Service model offers affordable access to high-performance computing, removing cost barriers for startups and enterprises alike.

By combining global technology from Nvidia, ASUS, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) with South Africa’s homegrown expertise, Altron’s AI Factory aims to build a complete ecosystem for AI deployment and research.

Industry leaders say the launch could redefine Africa’s tech landscape, empowering local industries to develop AI solutions tailored to African challenges — from language processing to digital health.

Altron’s leadership describes this milestone as the start of South Africa’s AI economy, creating new opportunities in business, education, and innovation.
