His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has officially launched National Cyber Security Awareness Month, stressing the need for stronger public education, collaboration, and vigilance as Ghana faces rising cyber threats.
Speaking on the theme “Building a Safe, Informed and Accountable Digital Space”, the President highlighted that digitalization offers huge opportunities but also exposes the nation to serious risks. “Cyber threats know no borders, and it is crucial we put measures in place to avert them,” he said.
Cybercrime as a National Security Threat
President Mahama emphasized that cybercrime is becoming increasingly sophisticated and must be treated as a matter of national security. To strengthen Ghana’s defenses, his government has inaugurated a Joint Cyber Security Committee, tasked with working closely with international security partners to protect Ghana’s digital economy.
Citizens Urged to Play Their Role
Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak stressed that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. He urged citizens to protect their personal data, adopt safe online habits, and report suspicious activities, noting that cybercrime has already caused significant financial losses in Ghana.
Government’s Commitment
Hon. Sam Nartey George, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, said cyber threats are inevitable but can be managed with the right policies and vigilance. He advised Ghanaians to be cautious about the information they consume and share online, warning that misinformation is often used as a tool by cybercriminals.
As Ghana accelerates its digital transformation — from mobile money to e-government platforms — the importance of cybersecurity has never been greater. National Cyber Security Awareness Month is aimed at educating the public, strengthening resilience, and ensuring that the digital space remains safe for all users.
The President assured Ghanaians that his government is committed to protecting both individuals and businesses, while building a secure foundation for the country’s digital future.
