passport biometric offices: A clean, well-lit biometric capture station inside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ridge office…

Finding passport biometric offices in Ghana means knowing which of the 12 Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration capture centres is nearest to you, whether you need to book an appointment online first, and what documents to bring on the day. This guide lists every active biometric capture location as of April 2026, maps their opening hours, explains the GHS 100 standard application fee (April 2026), and flags common booking mistakes that delay your passport by weeks.

The biometric capture stage is where your fingerprints, photograph, and signature are recorded into the Ghana e-Passport system. You cannot skip this step. You cannot do it at home. And if you miss your appointment slot without rescheduling, you start the entire application process again from zero.

TL;DR

  • Ghana has 12 official passport biometric capture offices, 6 in Greater Accra alone
  • You must book an appointment at passportapplication.gov.gh before visiting any office
  • Standard passport application fee is GHS 100, expedited is GHS 250, same-day is GHS 400 (April 2026)
  • Capture takes 10 to 15 minutes if you arrive prepared with printed forms and ID
  • Walk-ins are not accepted at any location as of January 2026

Where Are the Passport Biometric Offices?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs operates 12 biometric capture centres across Ghana. Six are in Greater Accra, three in Ashanti Region, and one each in Western, Northern, and Upper East regions.

The Ridge office processes the highest volume, about 800 appointments per day. Tema and Madina handle 300 to 400 each. The newest office, Kasoa, opened in November 2025 to ease congestion for Central Region applicants who previously travelled to Accra.

Kumasi processes 500 to 600 appointments daily, second only to Ridge. Takoradi handles Western and parts of Central Region. Tamale serves the three northern regions. Bolgatanga opened in March 2025 to reduce travel burden for Upper East and Upper West residents who previously drove 6 hours to Tamale.

How to Book Your Biometric Appointment

Walk-ins ended in January 2026. Every applicant must book online at passportapplication.gov.gh. The booking portal opens 30 days in advance. Slots fill within hours for Ridge and Kumasi, within 2 to 3 days for other locations.

Booking Steps

  1. Complete your passport application form online at the portal
  2. Pay the GHS 100 application fee (April 2026) via MTN Mobile Money, Vodafone Cash, or AirtelTigo Money (GHS 2 transaction fee applies)
  3. Select your preferred biometric office from the dropdown menu
  4. Choose an available date and time slot (15-minute windows, 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM)
  5. Receive confirmation SMS and email with appointment code
  6. Print the confirmation page and application summary (both required on the day)

The system sends a reminder SMS 48 hours before your appointment. If you miss your slot, the GHS 100 fee is forfeited. You must restart the application and pay again.

For step-by-step guidance on the entire passport application, see our Ghana Passport Application 2026 Guide.

What to Bring on Biometric Day

Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time. Late arrivals forfeit their slot. Security will not admit you without these documents:

  • Printed appointment confirmation page (must show barcode)
  • Printed application summary form
  • Original birth certificate (for first-time applicants) or old passport (for renewals)
  • Original Ghana Card or valid national ID
  • Two passport-size photographs (white background, no glasses, no smiling, taken within 6 months)
  • Payment receipt (if you paid via bank rather than mobile money)

Children under 18 need a parent or legal guardian present with original birth certificate, guardian’s Ghana Card, and guardian’s consent form (downloaded from the portal).

If you are renewing an expired passport, bring the old passport even if it expired 10 years ago. The system cross-references your old passport number. Missing this document adds 2 to 3 weeks to your processing time while the ministry manually verifies your identity.

For renewal-specific requirements, see our Ghana Passport Renewal Process guide.

The Biometric Capture Process

Once inside the office, the flow is standardised:

  1. Document verification (5 minutes) , an officer checks your printed forms, ID, and photographs against your online record
  2. Fingerprint capture (3 minutes) , digital scanner records all 10 fingerprints, left hand first, then right hand
  3. Photograph capture (2 minutes) , studio-grade camera takes frontal and profile shots, no glasses, neutral expression
  4. Signature capture (1 minute) , you sign on a digital pad three times
  5. Review and confirmation (2 minutes) , officer shows you the captured data on-screen, you confirm accuracy

Total time inside: 10 to 15 minutes if your documents are correct and your fingerprints scan cleanly. Scarred or worn fingerprints (common among manual labourers, farmers, and elderly applicants) may require 3 to 5 re-scans.

After capture, you receive a collection slip with your passport tracking number. Standard processing takes 10 to 15 working days. Expedited processing (GHS 250 total fee, April 2026) takes 5 working days. Same-day processing (GHS 400 total fee, April 2026) is available only at Ridge and Kumasi offices, and only for applicants with urgent travel proof (flight ticket within 72 hours).

For expedited options, see our Expedited Ghana Passport: Cost and Time analysis.

Common Booking Mistakes That Delay Your Passport

Mistake 1: Booking the Wrong Office

You can select any office regardless of your home region, but collection happens at the same office where you did biometrics. If you book Ridge because slots open there first, but you live in Kumasi, you will travel to Accra twice: once for capture, once for collection. Choose the office nearest to your permanent address.

Mistake 2: Not Printing the Confirmation

The barcode on your printed confirmation is scanned at entry. Showing the SMS or email on your phone is not accepted. No printout means no entry, even if you travelled 4 hours to get there.

Mistake 3: Bringing Photocopies Instead of Originals

The officer needs to hold your original birth certificate or old passport to verify raised seals, watermarks, and security features. Photocopies fail this check 100% of the time.

Mistake 4: Ignoring the Photograph Specifications

Passport photos must have a white background, no shadows, neutral expression, no glasses, no head covering (unless religious, and even then the face must be fully visible). Passport Office rejects about 15% of applicants daily for bad photos. Use a professional photo studio (GHS 10 to GHS 15 in Accra, April 2026) rather than a phone camera.

Mistake 5: Assuming Walk-Ins Still Work

As of January 2026, no passport office accepts walk-ins. The security guard will turn you away at the gate. The change happened because daily walk-in queues exceeded 1,200 people at Ridge, causing 6 to 8 hour waits and frequent system crashes.

Accessibility and Special Needs

All 12 offices have wheelchair ramps and ground-floor biometric stations. Applicants with visual impairments can request verbal guidance through the fingerprint and signature process. Applicants who cannot sign their name due to disability can provide a thumbprint instead (requires a medical certificate from a government hospital).

Elderly applicants (70 years and above) and pregnant women can request priority slots by calling the office directly 3 days before the preferred date. Priority slots are limited to 10 per day per office.

Ghana-Specific Considerations

The GHS 100 standard passport application fee has not changed since 2022. Expedited (GHS 250) and same-day (GHS 400) fees increased by GHS 50 each in January 2025. Payment via mobile money adds a GHS 2 transaction fee (MTN and Vodafone) or GHS 3 (AirtelTigo). Bank payment via Ghana Commercial Bank or Consolidated Bank Ghana is fee-free but requires visiting a branch in person.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to open 4 additional biometric offices in 2026: Ho (Volta Region), Sunyani (Bono Region), Koforidua (Eastern Region), and Cape Coast (Central Region). Construction timelines have not been published as of April 2026.

Ghana Card is the preferred national ID for passport applications. Voters ID is accepted but adds 3 to 5 working days to processing while the Electoral Commission confirms your identity. Driver’s license alone is not accepted. NHIS card alone is not accepted.

For children under 16, both parents must consent unless one parent has sole legal custody (requires court order). Single parents traveling alone with children under 16 need a notarised consent letter from the non-traveling parent. See our Children’s Ghana Passport Process guide for full details.

Dual citizens applying for a Ghanaian passport must present their foreign passport and a Ghana Card. The dual citizenship certificate issued by the Ministry of Interior is no longer required as of February 2025. For dual-citizen-specific rules, see our Ghana Passport for Dual Citizens guide.

FAQs

Can I reschedule my biometric appointment if something comes up?

Yes. Log into the passport portal, go to “My Applications,” and click “Reschedule Appointment.” You can reschedule once for free up to 24 hours before your slot. A second reschedule costs GHS 20 (April 2026). Missing your appointment without rescheduling forfeits your GHS 100 fee.

Which biometric office is fastest for getting an appointment?

Bolgatanga, Obuasi, and Ejisu typically have same-week availability. Ridge and Kumasi book out 20 to 25 days in advance. Tema, Madina, and Takoradi book out 10 to 14 days in advance.

Do I need to bring my own pen for signing?

No. The signature is captured digitally on a touchscreen pad. You do not sign on paper.

Can my friend or family member do the biometric capture on my behalf?

No. The entire point of biometric capture is to verify that you are you. Sending a proxy is identity fraud and will result in arrest.

What happens if my fingerprints are scarred or worn?

The officer will attempt multiple scans. If scans fail after 5 tries, you will be referred to the National Identification Authority for a manual identity verification process. This adds 14 to 21 days to your passport processing time.

Can I collect my passport at a different office from where I did biometrics?

No. Collection happens at the same office where you completed biometric capture. You must return to that office in person with your collection slip and Ghana Card.

Is there a way to track my passport status online?

Yes. Use the tracking number on your collection slip at passportapplication.gov.gh/track. The portal updates daily at 6:00 PM.

Do I need an appointment to collect my passport once it is ready?

No. Collection does not require an appointment. Visit the office between 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM with your collection slip and Ghana Card. Collection takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Closing

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs processed 1.2 million passport applications in 2025, a 34% increase from 2024. The biometric appointment system reduced average wait times from 8 hours to 15 minutes, but the 30-day booking window still creates bottlenecks during peak travel seasons (December, July, August). Plan your application at least 6 weeks before intended travel to avoid same-day or expedited fees.

The planned 2026 office expansions will add 1,400 daily appointment slots nationally, bringing total capacity to 4,800 per day. Until then, book early, print everything, and arrive prepared.
