The National Teaching Council (NTC) has announced the extension of the deadline for untrained in-service teachers who got employed in the Ghana Education Service before September 2018, to apply for their professional status. According to the council, the affected workers will not be able to submit applications after August 31, 2024.
Teachers from various Colleges of Education and universities are required to write and pass the special Ghana Teaching Licensure Exams before they can teach in Ghanaian classrooms; however, a special dispensation was given to teachers who were already serving in the Ghana Education Service not to write the exam but to apply for their professional status.
“In reference to a letter dated July 26, 2022, the Council gave a special opportunity to in-service non-professional teachers (teachers employed before September 2018) to undergo an exemption exercise to secure the full license given to in-service professional teachers within two years after upgrading to a professional status. The exemption period will come to an end by December 2024,” the council said in a press statement.
Checks from the NTC found that some untrained in-service teachers were not complying with this directive as required, as many of them had not registered for their professional status.
With the deadline given now – August 31, 2024 – It is prudent for such teachers to apply for their professional status to avoid any problems with the council. To register for their professional status, all non-professional in-service teachers are to use the link here to register.
