Popular ride-sharing app, Uber, has made an announcement on the launch of Uber Lite, with a redesigned interface. This redesign is to help those in low connectivity areas and limited data plans to book rides, on Android phones.

Though, there is a redesign in the Uber Lite app, it maintains the basic functions of the rider app. It has in-app support and also has comes with critical safety features, such as an emergency button. The emergency button connects riders to a third party supplier who provides emergency services and security response services. Uber Lite  as well gives you the ability to share your trip with others – friends and family.

The General Manager for Uber Sub-Saharan Africa, Alon LITS, explained the need for Uber Lite.
“Every day, hundreds of thousands of South Africans rely on Uber for mobility and work, and we understand that a one-size-fits-all app doesn’t work for the diversity of network conditions, devices, and rider needs across the country.”

Lits continued that, “After extensive research with our riders, it was obvious we couldn’t just make a smaller copy of Uber. We needed to reimagine the experience for South Africa and key markets around the world.”

“The result is Uber Lite. A completely redesigned app that is light, simple, and works on any Android device and on any network,” Lits concluded.

Some notable features of the Uber Lite:

  • Maps on Demand: In the bid to keep the app lightweight and fast, the maps in Uber Lite do not load by default. The maps are only available when you need them, with just a tap.
  • Light on your phone: The Uber Lite app is less than 5MB in size. A smaller app frees up space for actual selfies and other apps. It has a response time is of 300-millisecond making the booking process very fast even in low connectivity areas.
  • Guided Pickups: Uber Lite directs users through the request process by identifying users’ current location. This reduces typing. If because of GPS issues or even network problem the app can’t detect your location, it allows you to choose popular landmarks nearby as your location.
  • Tap over Type: Uber Lite keeps typing to the minimal. You just have to tap a button to pick your destination. As an alternative to typing where you are, you can just pick a nearby point of interest for the pick-up. Also, the Uber Lite app keeps your city’s popular areas, so even when you are offline, you wouldn’t need internet connection for them to appear.

Moreover, the app stores where you go often, and shows you those options first. And the more you use Uber Lite, the smarter the app gets.
