Exam week is possibly the most stressful phase of a student’s life. It greatly compromises a person’s mental and physical health and during this time, it can be quite a challenge to find time for yourself and your health. However, it’s nothing that you can’t possibly manage.
Here are ten tips for you to stay healthy during exam season:

Eat healthy

It goes without saying that the more you consume healthy foods, the more active and fresh you will feel, especially during the exam season.
To counter all the exam-related stress, it is very important for you to eat regular and well-balanced meals throughout the day. Try to incorporate fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains in your diet since these will provide you with all the essential minerals and vitamins you need to stay healthy and mentally active.

Sleep well

Exam season is likely to ruin your sleep schedule and you may end up sleeping at odd hours throughout the day. The body is also often deprived of sleep because students usually pull an all-nighter every other day during their exams.  This can take a toll on your mental health because fatigued brains lose their ability to function properly. Therefore, you must get at least 8 hours of quality sleep each day if you are to survive through the exam season with good health.

Stretch and exercise

When you are studying, you often tend to sit in the same position for hours which can make your body extremely stiff and sore. Therefore, it is very important for you to exercise and stretch your back and muscles to prevent soreness. This will also increase your blood flow and heart rate.
Going outdoors for your mini exercise session is an even better idea because the fresh air will also give a boost to your lungs. However, if getting outside is a problem, try some easy indoor yoga routine to give yourself an energy boost.

Take time out

Exam season can have serious repercussions for your mind and body owing to excess stress, fatigue and anxiety. This, in turn, can be quite detrimental to your overall physical and mental health. In situations like these, it is very important to take time out and unwind yourself. Give your brain a break every once in a while so that it recharges faster and functions properly. Read a book, watch a movie, bake something, or perhaps go out with you friends for some time. This will help freshen you up and kick start all your body functions.

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is perhaps one of the biggest favours you could do to yourself during the exam season.
Staying hydrated is extremely important for both your health and body. Water helps improve your circulation, gets your blood pumping and also raises your blood pressure. Moreover, it makes you more focused and alert as well which can greatly help you during your study sessions.  Hydration also ensures that your body functions properly because all your organs, cells and tissues in the body need water to work properly.

Avoid caffeine overdose

For the majority of people, exam season calls the need for increased coffee and tea intake, consumption of energy drinks and sugary fizzy drinks. These provide your body with a great caffeine supply which helps you study till late night and pull those all-nighters. While at the moment, you may feel all active and alert, it actually does more harm than good to your body in the long run.
A caffeine overdose can, in fact, wreck your whole bodily system and lead to insomnia, upset stomach, muscle tremors, irritability, etc.
Thus, try substituting coffee with healthier beverages like fruit smoothies, milkshakes and herbal teas like turmeric tea.

Don’t forget to socialize

Being locked in your room and hunched over your study table for hours can really impact your social life. Exam season can also be quite isolating, and students often tend to completely forget their social life so that they can focus more on their studies. While this may keep you away from distractions, an unsocial life can be quite adverse for your mental and physical health.
A study also shows that being on your own can “compromise your physical and psychological resilience”. If anything at all, meeting your friends or going out with your family will give you an energy boost that will keep you active and fresh.

Keep your study space clean

Your study table or desk can be quite a messy and unpleasant sight during exams season with all your notes and books sprawled all over the place. You may not realize this at the time but cluttered and untidy spaces can cause additional stress which can often go unnoticed. A study was conducted where researchers compared people’s task performance in a disorganized environment versus an organized one. The results showed that physical clutter resulted in increased stress and reduced work performance. This suggests that to stay healthy during exams, it is very important to be organized and keep your workspace clean.

Study in intervals

As much as you’d like to study nonstop, research proves that taking a ten-minute breather or break very hour is essential for your health, mind and body. This helps give your brain a break and prevent it from being overburdened and stressed out.
You can use these breaks to relax, listen to some music, feed your pet, walk around or grab a bite.

Step outside

Being enclosed in your room or the library all day long can significantly add to your stress. You need to go outside, enjoy the weather, absorb some sunlight, and get fresh air. Being in nature can greatly reduce stress levels and contribute to positive health. It also boosts and strengthens your immune system. If you are pressed for time, simply grab your books and laptop and study outside amid the trees and the birds.
Regardless of how tough your exam phase is, never compromise on your health, and while you are at it, don’t forget to breathe!
