TECNO Camon 15 review by John-Bunya Klutse.
This stunning elegant looking TECNO Camon 15 is the latest addition to TECNO’s Camon series. Launched in February 2020, the Camon 15 is selling at GHS 969 Ghana cedis in Ghana.
The Camon 15 comes in two models; the standard Camon 15 and the Camon 15 Pro. My review unit is the TECNO Camon 15, and this is the only unit available in Ghana. It comes in 3 colours: shoal gold, fascinating purple, and jade. The colour of my review unit is the fascinating purple which commands that feminine feel and looks.
Comparing to its predecessor (Camon 12), the Camon 15 features improvement in areas such as the memory and storage, camera, display, and battery.
You are going to like 6.6″ IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display – it’s got FHD resolution with a 20:9 aspect ratio, offering a good screen area.
And on paper, we seem to be looking at a recipe for success for a standard budget smartphone: the chip of choice is the Mediatek MT6765 Helio P22, a big battery (5000mAh) the quad AI rear camera, and the 6.6-inch display stretches from edge to edge with rounded corners.
I have had the TECNO Camon for ten days and this is what I have to say. Let’s get started.

TECNO Camon 15 review
Design and 360-degree view
With a 20:9 aspect-ratio, the Camon 15 guarantees a full display at a resolution of 720 by 1600 pixel. The bezels of this phone has been well managed to give it an excellent screen-estate. Ignoring a notch camera for a 16MP punch-hole cut-out is the latest addition to the Camon 15. The punch-hole camera blends neatly into the screen, making it impossible to cause any distraction when viewing a video. Generally, the phone looks elegant and feels handy even for people with small size palms. The design still maintains rounded-corners. TECNO maintains the use of on-screen buttons, keeping the surface extremely clean.
Due to the lack of an AMOLED display which would have accommodated an in-display fingerprint like we have in the TECNO Phantom 9, the Camon 15 has the fingerprint scanner mounted at the back (rear). You are presented with the quad AI camera (48 MP, 2 MP,2 MP,QVGA), Innovation designed by Tecno inscribed, and the TECNO logo on the back all aligned centred vertically to the bottom.
The fascinating purple used as the back cover gives the device the perfect aesthetics—the ideal colour for ladies or people who generally vibe with the feminine personality.
On the sides, we have the sim-tray which now pops in a microSD slot too on the left, and the power switch on and separated volume keys on the right.
The 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom to join the microUSB port for charging, the speaker grill, plus a microphone cut-out and making the top of the vacant.
As I mentioned above, the TECNO Camon 15 comes with a 5000Ah battery which is bigger than that of its predecessor. This is why the phone feels quite heavy in the palm, weighing 196 grams.
Display, battery life
The TECNO Camon 15 uses a 6.6 IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. The 720x1600px resolution in a 20:9 aspect makes for a 266 ppi density. With a good internet connection, you are going to have fun watching videos on this device in full display.
The Camon 15 is powered by a 5000mAh battery. That is a big battery there. It takes between 150 minutes to 180 minutes to move from flat to fully charge on the Camon 15. This is because its charging brick does not support fast charging.
For heavy usage, this device can last for 12hrs or more with a single charge.
In order to extend the lifespan of your battery, try to keep it between 30% to 80%. Don’t overcharge it above 80% and don’t also allow it to run down below 30%. Thank me later.
User interface, features, security, performance
HiOS 6.0 on top of Android 10
Camon 15 runs on TECNO’s latest HiOS 6.0 on top of Android 10. This new update brings new exciting features such as AI Assistant, AI Video Beauty, Smart Panel and AI Battery Lab to define the meaning of an intelligent smartphone truly.
With this new update, one can intelligently identify and broadcast the incoming calls, messages, news, etc.
Here are some key features of the new HiOS 6.0:
Dark Theme: It uses less of your phone’s battery, and causes less strain on your eyes in dim environments.
WhatsApp Flashlight Calls: An accessibility feature by flashing your phone to provide a visible cue for WhatsApp incoming Calls.
Wifi share: Wifi share gives you a handy option to share your WiFi through a QR code. when your friend visits your home, you can just ask him/her to scan the code, then boom – they’re connected to your WIFI hotspots.
To do that, head to Settings > Network & internet > WiFi and click on the connected WIFI name. After scanning the QR code, you can enjoy surfing on the internet.
WhatsApp Status Rescuer: Say no to 24 hours-limited vanished. Now you are the one who have the option (15 days, 1 month, 3 months, forever) to save WhatsApp status as long as you want!
Gesture Navigation: A new gesture-based option to give your more immersive switch experience. A quick left or right swipe will take you back to your previous menu and a quick swipe up from the bottom of the phone screen will take you back to your home screen.
Off-screen gaming: A special design for Game lovers. They can choose screen-off to save battery and data while unstop gaming.
Pop-up Messages: While playing games, WhatsApp and Messenger messages will Pop-up as notifications. There is no need to stop games and check your message to avoid gaming interruption. it is only used for WhatsApp and Messenger messages
Parental Control: Monitor and track your child’s online activity. Give you the confidence to safeguard your children when using smartphones and tablets in this enticing digital era.
Turn on parental control on setting, you can restrict what content and how long you Child can play.
Gesture call picker: It allows you to answer calls on your TECNO phone without touching the screen or even the phone. Just use simple V gesture to answer the phone and Palm gesture to reject the calls
Other exciting features that can be enabled include:
- Screenshot with 3 fingers by sliding from the top of the screen to the bottom
- Usage modes like WhatsApp ( which allows only apps you open use your data), Read Mode, AI Mode,
There is nothing new on the security front. Camon 15 comes with the default security features like the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and Face unlock. I need to mention that the fingerprint is anti-oil.
Processor and memory
My user experience so far fluid. A performance boost from Mediatek MT6762 Helio P22 chipset that clocks at 2.0 GHz Octa-Core coupled with a 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage make the Camon 15 competitive in its class of smartphones. However, the most apparent difference is going to be experienced when playing games. Frame rates aren’t as smooth, so hardcore gamers may not find them suitable. However, casual gamers will find it suitable.
There’s a dedicated microSD card slot in addition to the dual SIM slots. In other words, you may have two SIMs in there and enjoy expandable storage at the same time.
The specs are decent so even though there is the presence of bloatware on the phone, it does not affect the overall performance and storage. You can uninstall any app you don’t consider useful.
The core selling point of Camon 15 is its rear camera.
TECNO Camon 15 comes with 16MP front/selfie camera with dual flash which is not any different from the predecessor, and at the rear is a Quad AI (48 MP, 2 MP,2 MP,QVGA) camera with quad flash.
The rear is a Quad AI camera consists of a 2MP secondary camera (AI Bokeh effect), 48MP main camera (AI scene recognition, AI HDR), and 2MP close-shot lens, and Ultra Night lens.
The rear camera has a wide-angle fixed-focus lens, and it is very useful when you need to capture more in the frame without stepping back. Alas, the camera has its drawbacks. Since it isn’t as sensitive to light as the main camera, its low-light photos lack detail, and the properties of the lens introduce noticeable distortion that makes the images appear stretched near the edges.
There’s an HDR+ mode which activates automatically when needed, and while it produces outstanding images in some cases, other scenes look flat and artificial.
At the front, we have a single 16MP selfie camera with an f/2.0 lens. Low-light images out of the front camera are quite good, but not spectacular. They’re a little soft, and there isn’t a ton of detail in there. The dual flash really makes a difference indoors and in low-light environments.

Alternatives, pros and cons, price, verdict
If you are looking for a pocket-friendly standard smartphone on a budget of GHS1000 with good performance and camera, just get the TECNO Camon 15 – at the time of this review, there is currently no alternative as Infinix is yet to release their 2020 phones into the Ghanaian market, and the closest to this is expensive and of a higher range.
+ Excellent display
+ Big battery
+ Punch-hole camera
+ The screen is curved, not flat
+ No fast charging
Tecno Camon 15 price
The Camon 15 is selling at GHS 969.
Among the budget smartphones for 2020 we available in Ghana, the Camon 15 stands out as it currently has no rival.
Overall, The phone is fast, the screen is large, immersive, has beautiful colours, the new HiOS 6 makes a difference, the cameras have improved, and a big battery.
How long will it last?
The TECNO Camon 15 has no water resistance, so it won’t play well with water. Thankfully, it’s not made of glass, so you don’t need to worry about shattering both sides of the phone (just one).
This phone will likely last you two years if not three before the battery begins to deteriorate. You can only expect one year of version updates from TECNO, however, so the phone’s elder years will be spent running an outdated version of Android.
Who should buy this?
This budget device is ideal for anyone who desires standard features but can’t afford a midrange phone.
Should you buy it?
Yes, good for the price of GHS 969. Other phones within this category cost more or have slightly lesser specs.
