4G LTE service provision in Ghana is still gaining ground, and with the likes of mainstream telcos such as MTN and Vodafone coming into the game, consumers have been blessed with variety and competitive prices. However, Surfline, which was the first player in the 4G space in Ghana has not had a fair play in competing with other companies to maintain competitive data prices to its customer.
Most Ghanaians are of the view Surfline is expensive! We caught up with CEO after the 5th-anniversary launch, and this is what he had to say:
Responding to woes of customers in an exclusive interview with jbklutse.com, Mr Rene Gameli-Kwame, CEO of Surfline said that the telecommunications business is capital intensive and for Surfline which is a relatively smaller institution, its pricing will be affected negatively.
“With other networks, they control most of the infrastructure that goes into the pricing of the product. Surfline is a smaller institution. We do not own our international gateway. We do not own our fibre optics network… so the pricing module is not because Surfline wants to make unnecessary profits.” He said.
He added that in the coming years, Surfline will make very strategic investments which will lead to them owning some of these infrastructure and subsequently cause them to maintain a competitive price.
He also hinted on a gradual expansion of its coverage into other regions.
“We are putting up infrastructure and trying to partner with other institutions and companies to help us with the rollout… we are looking at covering all regional capitals and very soon, we will share our roll-out plan”
According to him, Surfline is entering into strategic partnerships which will make all these possible in addition to providing public WiFi.
In spite of the market challenges the company is facing, they have strived to give the best value to their customers. For instance, the Surfline Extra Time Offer which gives users 1GB free sponsored data to complete their online activity and get them back online whenever they run out of main data.
Looking for a true 4G LTE service in Accra, Tema, Kasoa and its environs, and some part of the western region, then consider Surfline!
