The most recent Unpacked event held virtually by Samsung, was another great experience of getting to know what’s new from the company. The first-ever virtually held event, had several on-screen presenters and superstar band, with BTS also joining virtually to unveil one of the new products.
The phone company unveiled all the new products they were bringing to the table under the theme “The Next Level.” At the event, Samsung announced the latest versions of its perennial favourite phablet line, Note 20.
The latest version comes in 6.7 inch and 6.9-inch models, and both models will have 5G. However, the Ultra version will use a replica technology as that of Galaxy S20, since it comes with 120Hz refresh rate and a hybridised 50x superzoom.
There was also something new to the 5G game, which was the Galaxy Tap series. The new line, according to Samsung, will include the first tablet that supports 5G available in the United States. There was no pricing information on the 5G versions, however, the new versions which start at $650 and $850 respectively, and will come in 11-inch and 12.4-inch display on the S7 and the S7+.
A pair of new wearable too was unveiled at the event — two bean Buds, including the Galaxy Bud Live, which introduces active voice cancelling and the cool feature of being able to double as a connected devices’ mic. The new product is now available for $170.
Another wearable unveiled at the unpacked event was the Galaxy Watch 3, which returned with its awesome physical bezel-long. The Samsung smartwatch comes with improved sleep and fitness tracking and an ECG monitor, which was announced to have received clearance from the FDA. The Galaxy Watch 3 – 41mm runs for $400 while the 45mm runs for $430. The LTE models which will also be available soon will cost $50 more.
Moving away from wearables, Samsung also announces its latest foldable, Galaxy Z Fold 2 at the Unpacked event. The new version largely fixes the numerous problems with the processor. Thus, a new glass reinforcement for the screen and a hinge that sweeps the debris that falls in and breaks the screen away. The announcement of this product was done with the help of BTS. More updates about the products will be announced on September 1.
Another addition announced at the Unpacked event this year was the UWB (ultra-wideband), which enables features including close proximity file sharing, a find my phone-style feature with an AR and a future unlock feature in partnership with Assa Abloy. A brief remote cameo was made by Xbox head, Phil Spencer announcing the Game Pass access, which allows more than 100 streaming titles on the device. Shipping of the models starts on August 21, and it starts at $1,000.
Moments before the show came to an end, head of mobile, TM Toh gave his closing note disclosing that, “Going forward, 5G and foldable will be the major pillar of Samsung’s future.”
