It looks leaking patents is not ending now and surprisingly this year’s patents are all about cameras. Remember Apple’s accidentally leaked patent on their intent-detecting camera? Just this week, Xiaomi’s patent came out and it was also about camera.
So for me, it is not surprising to see Samsung’s patent in which they are considering putting a camera in a stylus pen.
The mobile phone giant wants to insert a camera with optical zoom into an upcoming stylus. The patent was first spotted by Patently Mobile. This patent which was filed back in February 2017 but was granted just last Tuesday, February 5 – two years after.
According to the patent, the stylus pen would be made to be able to wirelessly send any images back to its mobile device – phone or tablet. It may utilise the Bluetooth support technology that was added with the Note 9’s S Pen stylus.

If Samsung builds this S Pen with a built-in camera, a couple benefits will be ripped off it. For instance, the phone’s main body normally takes away the option of an optical zoom due to its space limitations.
And the Samsung patent explicitly makes mentions of the stylus’ camera coming with an “optical zooming function.” That’s very cool of Samsung.
Just imagine removing the camera from the phone to take photos. This would give you more flexibility with how to take the photos. It will allow you to take them from appropriate vantage points while you use the phone’s display to see how exactly you’re taking it.
Don’t get hopes high till Samsung announces it
Note that not all patented features actually make it into a future device. There is no guarantee.
But as Bloomberg reports that Samsung struggled with weak sales in 2018, it may use an eye-catching feature like this to bounce back.
