youtube take a break

If you should ask me what Goggle has been up to in recent times, I would say that they are on a drive to ensure that people don’t get addicted to their devices. But if you should ask me why they are doing that, I would say I don’t know. Why should Google, a company which makes money when people use their phone more introduce measures such as a feature that allows you to activate something like “YouTube take a break”?

But it doesn’t start here. First, they introduced the Android P beta version which among other features, has the ability to record your usage patterns and tells you the amount of time you spend on your Smartphone. How much time you spend on each app and how many times you’ve unlocked your phone in the last 24 hours.

YouTube Take a Break Feature

The new Feature on YouTube’s Mobile App for Android and iOS helps you keep track of the amount of time you spend on the app. This is done by constantly reminding you of the time spent at a chosen interval. , his of course, can be adjusted to your preference.

This may look like an extreme way of controlling your usage but hey, think about it! Sometimes, you click a link to watch a YouTube video and after that, you are tempted to watch another, and another, and another, and yet another…

Aside eating up your data, it is time consuming and it increases chances of you getting addicted to your device and more specifically, YouTube. So activating this feature will save you all these in the long run.

Thanks to this feature, you can now set a reminder. Like an alarm clock which would remind you when you’ve reach the stipulated time. You have 15, 30, 60, 90 and 180 minutes options to choose from or you can just turn it off altogether.

This feature is only available on the latest version of the YouTube app. So make sure you check if your YouTube app is updated by heading straight to your respective stores. Google Play Store for Android devices and Apple App Store for iOS devices.

If it isn’t up to date, you need to follow these steps to update it:

  1. Open the Google Play Store app
  2. Tap Menu Menuand then My apps & games.
  3. Apps with an update available updates are labeled “Update.”
  4. Tap Update All to update all apps. For individual apps, find the specific app you want to update and tap Update.

iOS

  1. Go to the App Store.
  2. At the bottom of the screen, tap Updates.
  3. If the YouTube app is not up-to-date, you’ll see it in the Updates section. Next to the YouTube logo, tap Update.

Now that you have ensured that your app is up to date, you can now proceed to activating this cool feature.

How to use YouTube Take A Break feature

  • Open The YouTube App and Click On Your Profile Photo/YouTube account at the top right hand corner of your screen.

  • Click On Settings.

  • Select General.

  • At the top of the screen, you should see the Remind Me To Take A Break.

  • Click On it and you would see the Following:
  • Never
  • Every 15 Minutes
  • Every 30 minutes
  • This is my favourite Every 60 minutes
  • Every 90 minutes
  • Every 180 Minutes

  • Choose the one you want and that’s it.

Now the YouTube app would remind you to ‘Take a break’ at intervals depending on the timer you picked. For example, if you choose the 15 minutes option and go back to play a video or video longer than that, you would get a notification like the one in the picture below when the timer is reached.

You can either dismiss it and continue watching your video or you can click on Settings and change it. That is if you don’t want the take a break Feature disturbing you at intervals.

So this is all you may need to cut down on your YouTube usage. Try it!
