In a world where there are many different varieties of baby formulas, finding the one with clean ingredients that help your baby achieve the health and growth milestones can sometimes be quite difficult. With our global economy, many Americans have decided to look outside of the standard formulas made here in the USA in search of better baby formulas.
Parents can choose from either regular or organic formulas. Both America and Europe have organic baby formulas, but which one has the better organic formula?
This is what we discuss in this article. We also review a popular organic formula called Lebenswert.
What’s the Difference between Organic Formula in Europe and the U.S.?
Formulas made in Europe have stricter guidelines for their formulas, whereas in the U.S. we have more lenient regulation on what can be added to our formulas. In order for a formula to be considered organic in Europe they have to be certified.
Certification in the EU entails a strenuous process: they have to contain no GMOs, no added hormones or steroids, only use antibiotics to keep animals healthy, a minimum of 95% of organic ingredients, cows and goats are fed a 100% organic diet with no synthetic additives, and no preservatives or synthetics are added to the formula. Every can of the formula goes through multiple quality checks for every step of the process.
With American formula, the FDA allows formula manufacturing companies to use chemical processes, fillers, and unnatural preservatives as main ingredients. Also, there are very few American formulas that have been certified by the USDA. With the few organic options for parents to choose from, they are subjected to compromise with filler ingredients such as sucrose (sugars) and soy added to many of these organic options.
Lastly, the European formula comes in stages to meet the nutritional needs of the baby at each stage of development. American formula is kind of a “one size fits all stages” of a baby’s development.
What is Lebenswert Baby Formula?
Lebenswert organic baby formula was created by the manufacturer Holle. The word Lebenswert is German and means livable in English.
Lebenswert is Bioland Certified. Bioland certification means that the formula is made on a sustainable biodynamic farm. The formula is free from pesticides and herbicides. The milk comes from grass fed cows with no added hormones. This formula is also EU Certified.
If you are still pregnant and looking for an option in case breastfeeding doesn’t work, Lebenswert Stage 1 is for babies newborn to six months. This formula can be used with breastfeeding or by itself, as it has natural properties that make it similar to breast milk.
Lebenswert formula is filled with essential proteins and calcium to support healthy bones. It also contains essential nutrients, such as vitamin A, B, C, D and zinc to help give your baby a healthy body and immune system.
There are no added sugars, GMO’s, chemicals, pesticides or herbicides; they only use 100% natural sources.
What have we learned?
In this article we discussed the difference between American organic formula and European organic formula. We learned that formulas made in Europe have stricter guidelines on what can and cannot be added to the formulas for them to be considered organic. We also reviewed one of the oldest organic formulas, Lebenswert.
As you can see from everything we discussed in this article, European formulas are an excellent choice to meet your baby’s needs when breastfeeding is not an option. They are also a great option to help give your baby an extra boost when breast milk is not enough.
