Watching movies is a thing I enjoy doing, and movies that fuel my love for computers, and technology geniuses is something I love.
Here, I present you with a list of movies about technology and computer programming I’ve loved over the years. From biopics to scary war situations to emotionally stimulating sci-fi, grab a mug of coffee or a box of popcorn while your friends are around… or simply watch these by yourself.
Table of Contents
1. HIDDEN FIGURES
This movie is about black female mathematicians who worked at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during the Space Race.
Before advanced technology made it possible for computer algorithms to be doing the calculations for NASA missions, there were human “computers” who did all that math by hand. Unfortunately, until Hidden Figures came out what a lot of people didn’t know was that a number of those early “computers” were Black women mathematical geniuses.
The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monàe.
2. WAR GAMES
The film stars Matthew Broderick as David Lightman, a young hacker. His love for computers leads him to unwittingly accesses WOPR (War Operation Plan Response), a United States military supercomputer originally programmed to predict possible outcomes of nuclear war. Lightman gets WOPR to run a nuclear war simulation, believing it to be a computer game. The computer, now tied into the nuclear weapons control system and unable to tell the difference between simulation and reality, attempts to start World War III.
A cult classic, this is one of those movies that are both interesting and boring at the same time.
In the film, a group of teenagers band together to prove the innocence of one of their own Dade “Zero Cool” Murphy (Jonny Lee Miller), after he discovers a worm designed to embezzle millions planted in “The Gibson”—a supercomputer used by Ellingson Mineral Company.
It stars Angelina Jolie, among others.
When the adorable Wall-E falls in love with a probe named EVE after he spots her as she returned to Earth to scope things out, Wall-E (an acronym for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class ) follows her back across the galaxy on an epic adventure—and one that showcases EVE’s ability to save the day. This movie might make you emotional for a second… or two.
5. INDEPENDENCE DAY (1996)
When the aliens came to wage war against Earthlings, it took the anger of Will Smith’s badass fighter pilot character, Capt. Steve Hiller and Jeff Goldblum whose genius character, David Levinson, figured out what the aliens are up to, how their computer systems work, and how to bring them down with a virus.
Okay, these are some of my favourite movies concerning technology for now. What about you? Want to share what tickles your love for computers too? Please don’t forget to comment on this.
