The Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) is hosting a two-day app competition on its campus from May 27 to May 28, 2016 at 10am. Titled the “Accra Trotro Apps Challenge”, the event will bring members of both the public transport sector and tech ecosystem together to develop solutions that can improve mobility in Accra.
MEST is partnering with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the French Agency for Development (AFD) to organise this event. The AMA will be providing data on trotro routes which it has accumulated through its department of transport in conjunction with the AFD.
According to the data, there are over 300 trotro routes registered and these facts were recorded last year using smartphones with GPS capabilities.
Based on the data provided, participants are to come up with app ideas that will make an impact on public transportation in Accra in terms of mobility and development.

Trotro is the name given to the public buses in Ghana (much like danfos in Lagos). With a population of approximately 4 million, the transport system in Accra is in need of some modification. This is what MEST, AMA and AFD hope to achieve with this apps challenge.
The challenge is open to developers who not only have interests in data and development, but also have ideas that can transform the public transport system in Accra.
