How to Download Audio on a Mac

Apple’s cloud system is a great thing. You can keep all your music and podcasts on the cloud, so they won’t consume any space on your computer.
But sometimes you need audio files there. Maybe you’re headed off to someplace with no Internet connection, and you want to enjoy your favourite music. Maybe you want to avoid Apple’s music service and download something without paying for it. Sometimes you need to save music from Soundcloud or get the audio from a PowerPoint presentation. What about YouTube? Can you download or record sound from it?
We’ll give you a few options on how to download or record audio on a Mac.

  • Use QuickTime to Record Audio

What if you want to save a YouTube video or an online exercise class to your computer? You might want to use this content later. The first idea that comes to mind is your Mac’s screen recording feature. With a simple keyboard shortcut (Shift+Command+5), you’ll record the visuals and audio from your screen. But such files consume a lot of space on your computer. If you only need the audio, you can use QuickTime to record it.
With this app, you can capture any audio from a website. Open the app and right-click on the icon in the Dock. You’ll see the option: New Audio Recording. Allow the app to access the microphone.
You’ll see a small window with a record button. Click the arrow next to it and choose MacBook microphone.
Then, start the audio you want to capture, and click the record button.

  • Download Music from Apple Music

If you have many files in Apple Music, you can easily download the ones you want on your computer.
First, open the app and browse in the sidebar on the left. You can find the item you need if you browse the categories or search the catalog. Next to all audio files, you’ll see the More button. When you click on it, you will see the Download option. The file will be saved on your computer in a matter of seconds.

  • Use an App to Download Audio

If you want to get better quality out of the downloaded sound, you can use a special app. Audio Hijack is one of the options. It’s a tad more complicated than recording with QuickTime, but the quality will be much higher. The app is rather expensive ($59), but there’s a trial version you can use.
To record audio with this app, you’ll need to start a new session. Then, choose the application that plays the audio you want to record (it maybe Safari, for example). This is the moment when you’ll need to install the Audio Capture Engine (ACE) and enter the system password. You’ll get access to the recorder from that point. In the app, you’ll need to paste the URL of the page with the desired file. Finally, you can start recording.
It sounds like a complicated process, but you’ll get used to it when you start using the application.
How about some options? There are other apps that let you capture audio: Elmedia Player PRO, Airy and Folx PRO.

These Recordings Are for Personal Use Only

Keep this to mind: you cannot broadcast recorded material. If you need audio for a presentation or any kind of event, you have to be aware of copyright regulations. When the material is not available for free downloads, you can contact the copyright owner for permission to use it.
If you plan to save a few recordings to use when you don’t have access to the Internet, it’s okay. Just keep in mind that they will take up tons of space on your Mac, so you can’t save too many of them.
