The Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC) has introduced an ICT training programme for security personnel in the Eastern Region to aid them in the fight against cybercrime and its related activities. This programme will help the security services including the Police, Immigration, Prisons and Fire Service to be efficient in the fight against cybercrime.

The acting president of GTUC, Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, led the launch of the training programme. Prof. Afoakwa said GTUC is pledging an amount of GH¢500,000 in tuition to train more than 1000 personnel in the four main security services: Fire, Immigration, Police, and Prisons.

The GTUC cybercrime training programme is supposed to run over the course of three years. Throughout the training over the three years, the security services would be technologically inclined enough to fight internet-related crime activities.

The professor also revealed that GTUC has plans of rolling the programme across all its regional campuses. Thus, not only security personnel in the Eastern region are going to be beneficiaries of the programme.

He said:
“The tuition-free 2 months basic IT training in the Eastern Region is only a pilot programme and we at GTUC intend to roll it across our regional campuses (Ho, Takoradi, and Kumasi) to help make our security services ready to fulfil the government agenda of safe and prosperous Ghana beyond Aid.”

Also, at the launch was the Eastern Regional Deputy Minister, Samuel Nuertey Ayertey. He added to the professor’s remarks that the revolution of Information Technology came along with complex crime activities, thus, there is also the need for personnel highly skilled in IT to combat the problem.

“Our security personnel need to be equipped with the requisite skills and technology if they have to be relevant in our pursuit to combat crime.”

The GTUC cybercrime training will run in batches. Professor Afoakwa said the programme will have it focus on the basics in Computer Health Safety and Maintenance, Information and Communication (cyber), word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation.
These courses will then be advanced with additional training in Cyber Security and Forensics. But if you want to go for a physical security training, Centre for Security Training and Management Inc. is an ideal option for you.
