Ghana’s institution for collecting taxes, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has awarded the largest telecom company in the country. MTN Ghana was presented with a Platinum award by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for the company’s dedication towards payment of tax in Ghana.
Under the GRA’s large tax payer category, the Platinum award is the highest award. Given the Platinum award means the receiver is compliant with all the tax laws in the country. The award also symbolises the highest contributor to tax revenue in the large tax payer category.
This year, MTN Ghana was the only company to receive the Platinum award. Over the last 5 years, MTN Ghana has been regularly contributing an average of 3% of the total tax in Ghana
GRA as well presented MTN with a citation. In the citation, GRA acknowledged MTN’s consistent contribution to tax revenue in Ghana. The citation read:
“In 2018, your contribution to tax revenue was very impressive across all tax types. You filed your returns and paid taxes on due dates. For showing a consistent compliant attitude, GRA has awarded Scancom, operators of MTN the best Taxpayer over the years.
“For this reason, the Ghana Revenue Authority awards you, Scancom Limited, Operators of the MTN Brand this special award, the Platinum category for 2018 for being outstanding in fulfilling your tax obligations for the large tax payer office.”
This awards scheme is organised by the GRA to acknowledge and applaud business owners and taxpayers in general. The scheme praises those businesses who were able fulfilled their tax obligations under the year in review.
Remarks from MTN executives
Samuel Koranteng, the Corporate Services Executive of MTN Ghana, accepted the award on behalf of the telecom company. He believed the award would encourage more confidence in the company by the Ghanaian clients.
“This award is a testament of our commitment to being a good corporate citizen on all fronts. Without doubt, this will go a long way to reinforce the confidence Ghanaians placed in the business when they took the opportunity to own a part of the business in 2018.”
The CEO of MTN Ghana, Selorm Adadevoh, also commented on the recognition from the GRA. He said the company was “happy to receive this recognition from GRA. It is humbling. This is the highest in the large tax payer’s category and attest to MTN Ghana’s contribution to national development and shows our dedication to being compliant in every aspect of our operations.”
The CEO went on to say that MTN Ghana will be there to back the country’s efforts towards development.
“We will continue to support Government’s efforts at developing this country, whilst we continue to roll out innovative solutions that make our customer’s life a whole lot brighter.”

For the past 10 years, MTN Ghana has been part of the companies in the largest taxpayers group in the country. MTN has regularly been the receiver of the Best Taxpayer award from the GRA. In 2018, the company took the Commissioner General’s Special Award for 2017. Again in 2018, it was named the number one company of the year 2017 at the 17th Ghana Club 100 awards by Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC).
