Building Africa’s AI Talent

Google says the initiative is part of its mission to build AI skills among African youth, preparing them for a workforce increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and data-driven innovation.

“We are seeing a new wave of innovation in Africa, driven by the energy and ingenuity of our young people,” said Alex Okosi, Managing Director for Google in Sub-Saharan Africa. “By providing students with access to our most advanced AI tools, we want to empower them to excel in their studies and become builders of the future.”

What Students Will Get

Normally priced at ₵285 ($19.39) per month, the subscription will give students access to Gemini 2.5 Pro’s advanced capabilities, including:

  • In-depth academic research tools
  • AI-powered summarization of academic papers and reports
  • Code debugging and report generation
  • NotebookLM for organizing notes
  • Veo3 for turning text or images into presentation slides
  • 2 TB of cloud storage shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Photos

How to Apply

Students must have a Google account and verify their academic status through SheerID, a secure student verification platform. Verification requires a valid school ID card with expiration date, class schedule, and tuition receipt. Once approved, access will be activated immediately, with no payment required.

Why It Matters for Ghana

This initiative is expected to give Ghanaian students a major boost in tech-driven learning. With universities across the country pushing digital transformation and AI adoption, free access to Gemini 2.5 Pro could empower thousands of students to conduct smarter research, develop AI-based projects, and explore new career paths in technology.

The program builds on Google’s long-term investment in Africa’s digital ecosystem — including the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa, which has supported more than 140 startups across 17 countries, and the Digital Skills for Africa initiative, which has trained millions in digital literacy.

“This offer is about democratising access to technology and giving African students the skills to compete and lead on a global stage,” Okosi added.
