Ghana Passport

Ghanaian passports are passports issued exclusively by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to Ghanaians granted citizenship in accordance with the Ghanaian nationality law. There are three types of passport booklets – regular, service and diplomatic passports. Ghanaian passport booklets are valid for travel by Ghanaians anywhere in the world, although travel to certain countries and/or for certain purposes may require a visa. More than one valid Ghanaian passport of the same type may not be held. Aside from the protection, it gives you; its primary function is to set as an identification tool and proof of your Ghanaian citizenship. Unlike a birth certificate which is usually issued at birth, the Ghana passport has an entirely different process you have to go through to acquire.

Types of Ghanaian Passports

Contemporary Ghanaian passport:  Issuable to all citizens and non-citizen nationals and valid for five years from the date of issue. Service Ghanaian passport: issued to officials attached to government institutions who have to travel on official business Diplomatic Ghanaian passport: Issuable to Ghanaian diplomats accredited overseas and their eligible dependents.

The Ghanaian passport application process

Before 2016, applying for/renewing your passport required a totally manual process. This process called for the acquisition of a form from the passport office. After filling the form, you would have to join a long queue and book various appointments before you could finish the process. In most cases, the queue was even more frustrating than meeting someone in a waakye queue who wants to buy waakye for ten people. This queue could take you months to complete the process.  For this reason, some people who posed themselves as middlemen (also known as Goro boys) beat the process for customers at a fee. The “Goro boy system” was an industry on its own. After various years of complaints and deliberations, the Ghana government finally launched an online platform that would ease the process, reduce the queues and kill the “black-market-Goro industry”. In December 2016, there was a more straightforward process. You could now apply for your passport online. If you are yet to apply for your passport, here are the processes and things you should take note of:

Online Ghana Passport Application

The online Ghana passport application was introduced in 2017. The Application took an online turn when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration launched an online passport application service for Ghanaians to ease the mode of the application while ensuring maximum security for applicants. Since then, there has been a lot of talk about the process, with some Ghanaian been sceptical about the whole “online application” process. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration commissioned a new passport application centre last year, and this centre is to help Ghanaians obtain passports in a short period.

Can one apply for a Ghanaian Passport through the old method?

The Passport Application is not solely online. The “old” method of applying for a Passport will continue to be used alongside this new one. This would enable applicants who are not comfortable with the new system to go through the old one. It is not clear when the old System will be phased out, but that would not be anytime soon. This option is ideal of people leaving outside Accra who can’t afford or have the time to travel to Accra to take advantage of the online process.
