Elon Musk (A.K.A. Buff Mage), the controversial tech CEO, says Tesla cars will be able to talk to people soon, literally. He said this via a tweet, which had a video of a Tesla car saying “Well, don’t just stand there staring. Hop in!”
Elon then captioned the clip: “Teslas will soon talk to people if you want. This is real.” This was Elon’s way of announcing a new feature in Tesla cars. The company is adding external speakers to the cars as electric vehicles do not make human-audible noise like the normal fuel-powered vehicles.

Tesla is doing this to comply with new safety regulations that require electric cars to produce artificial noise to alert pedestrians, thus, reduce pedestrian accidents, which result from seemingly silent electric cars.
This move is also to let Tesla owners make money while the vehicle does the work, alone. As Jon Porter of The Verge puts it: “In an autonomous state, with no driver to invite passengers into the taxi, the car itself could be left to tell people to “hop in.”
Though, the CEO said “soon”, the feature may take a while to arrive, looking at the track record of Elon’s promises.
