Firstly, the plan encourages you to eat more fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are known to be rich in nutrients and accelerate weight loss because they are low in calories and tend to create a higher calorie deficit to increase weight loss.
According to a study of 133,000 participants in 2015, people with the highest intake of fruits and non-starchy vegetables showed the least change in weight change over four years.
Besides, this diet does not allow you to consume foods that increase weight gain. Sugary drinks, for example, are notorious for contributing to weight gain.
However, the GM diet plan allows you to select your choice of meats, fruits, and vegetables, even though it is strict in terms of the foods you are allowed to consume.

How does the GM diet plan work?

Knowing how the GM diet plan works is undoubtedly the crux of the article. Being the unconventional diet it is, the confusion surrounding it is entirely understandable. Here is how it works.

Day One

  • You may consume only one fruit — except for bananas.
  • There is no specific amount of fruit that you can consume.
  • The diet highly recommends that you eat melons as it expedites weight loss

Day Two

  • You may eat only cooked or raw vegetables
  • There is no specified quantity of vegetables that you can eat.
  • You may eat potatoes only for breakfast

Day Three

  • Include vegetables and fruits in your meals except for bananas and potatoes
  • Once again, the quantity is not specified.

Day Four

  • Include only bananas and milk in your meals.
  • You may eat six large bananas or eight small bananas
  • Consume three glasses of milk, ideally skimmed milk.

Day Five

  • On day five, you may eat two 10-ounce portions of beef, chicken, or fish.
  • You may add six whole tomatoes to your meal.
  • If you are a vegetarian, replace the meat with either brown rice or cottage cheese.
  • Make sure you increase your water intake by two glasses to rid yourself of the excess uric acid.

Day Six

  • Just like day five, you can eat only two 10-ounce portions of beef, chicken, or fish.
  • On this day, you may consume an unlimited amount of vegetables, but no potatoes.
  • Vegetarians can replace meat with either brown rice or cottage cheese.
  • As mentioned above, increase your water intake by two glasses to flush out the excess uric acid.

Day Seven

  • You may consume only fruits, fruit juice, and vegetables.
  • There is no specified amount for any of these foods.

Demerits of the GM Diet Plan

With a bizarre diet plan like this, it is not surprising that it has its disadvantages. These are the primary demerits of the GM diet plan.

No Concrete Evidence to support the diet plan

The lack of credible scientific evidence to support the authenticity of the GM diet plan is what attracts its well-deserved skepticism.
The truth is, aside from anecdotal evidence, there is no substantial evidence to support the claims of this diet plan.

Severe lack of Essential Nutrients in the GM Diet

The GM diet is not balanced and is likely to cause feelings of deprivation and hunger on some days, owing to the variance in the amounts of macronutrients it provides.
The GM diet provides relatively low amounts of protein on most days. This may be counterproductive because protein is known to reduce hunger, and ergo calorie intake, which is how it enhances weight loss.
The diet proves to be inconsistent in that it lacks in other essential nutrients. For instance, this diet showcases a severe lack of fat, vitamin B12, iron, and calcium.

Weight Loss on the GM Diet May Be Temporary

Moreover, most of the weight loss on this diet is usually water weight, and not the loss of fat.
When you drastically reduce your calorie intake, your body looks for other sources of fuel, which causes your body to break down glycogen, an energy-storage molecule found in your liver and muscles.
Glycogen tends to hold onto water. As your glycogen stores get depleted, this loss of water can cause your weight to drop rapidly.
Unfortunately, this type of weight loss is only temporary, and you are very likely to recover this weight when you resume your original diet.

Conclusion

At best, the GM diet plan makes for a quick way to lose weight. However, its demerits far outweigh its benefits. It is highly unlikely that you will lose weight in the long-run and maintain your health by following a quick fix like this.
Instead, you are better off maintaining a healthy diet and coupling it with regular weight loss exercise.
