During his visit to McCoy College of Education in the Nadowli-Kaleo District and Wa Senior High School in the Wa Municipality, the Deputy Minister interacted with participants and tutors engaged in ICT training sessions. He commended the enthusiasm of the learners and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing equal access to digital skills and opportunities.

Empowering Girls Through Technology

Mr. Sukparu highlighted the transformative role of the Girls in ICT initiative, emphasizing that it aims not only to provide technical skills but also to build confidence and inspire long-term careers in technology. He noted that the program aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of building a digitally inclusive Ghana, where every young person—especially girls—can participate in the global digital economy.

The Deputy Minister also revealed that the initiative offers multiple benefits, including scholarships, practical training, and job opportunities for outstanding participants. He called for ICT to be treated as a core subject in the national curriculum, just like mathematics and science, arguing that digital literacy is now essential for success in every field.

The One Million Coders Initiative

Mr. Sukparu hinted at the government’s upcoming One Million Coders Initiative, designed to train a new generation of Ghanaian youth in coding, software development, and emerging technologies. He said beneficiaries of the Girls in ICT Project would have a pathway to join the new program, further enhancing their career prospects in tech.

Government’s Ongoing Support

The Deputy Minister assured stakeholders that the Ministry will continue to monitor and support the program’s progress in the region. He added that the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, is expected to officially commission the project soon.

Local leaders, including the District Chief Executive of Nadowli-Kaleo, Mary Haruna, who represents President Mahama in the district, joined the Deputy Minister during the visit. Their participation reflects the strong collaboration between central government, local authorities, and educational institutions in advancing digital literacy among Ghanaian girls.

A Step Toward Gender Equality in Tech

The success of the Girls in ICT initiative in the Upper West Region is seen as a major milestone in Ghana’s digital transformation journey. It demonstrates how sustained investment in technology education can help bridge the gender gap and create a more inclusive, tech-driven society.

As Ghana continues to strengthen its position as a digital leader in Africa, projects like these serve as a reminder that empowering girls with digital skills is not just about equality — it’s about shaping the nation’s technological future.
