Employment in the healthcare industry has been growing steadily and this increase is expected to continue in the coming years. Many elderly people are living longer because new technology allows diseases to be detected and treated quickly. This will lead to a rise in demand for healthcare professionals who will take care of the growing ageing population. If you want to make a career change into healthcare, here are some of the jobs that will experience a higher growth rate.

Medical assistant

A medical assistant is a trained healthcare professional who performs both administrative and clinical duties inside a doctor’s clinic or outpatient care facility. Dental hygienist

Dental hygienists are oral health professionals who help patients to prevent and treat oral diseases. In most countries, dental hygienists must have a license before they start practising. This means they have to graduate from a university or college dental hygienist program. After obtaining this license, they are allowed to conduct full patient screening, apply fluoride and sealants to teeth and provide counselling and information to patients on oral hygiene. Licensing also allows them to practice without direct supervision from a dentist. These professionals also handle record keeping and office management, take and develop dental radiographs and take off plaque from patient’s teeth.

To become a trained caregiver, you need to pass through a minimum of 75 hours of post-secondary school training. Upon completion, you can take the required examinations to show your level of competence. The training programs will offer information about anatomy, nutrition and physiology. They also help students to understand and master techniques like grooming, toileting and bathing. Caregiving classes are available online, in community colleges and in nursing facilities.

Emergency medical technician (EMTs)

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) are trained clinicians who can provide a rapid response to emergency situations. EMTs are also known as ambulance technicians and paramedics. They take care of patients who need urgent medical attention at accident scenes, traumatic injuries and medical issues. EMTs are the first to respond to calls for emergency medical treatment and they drive ambulances to sites of natural disasters, oil spills, toxic waste and road traffic accidents amongst others.

Becoming an EMT usually takes about two years of training. During training, EMTs learn about life support techniques, how to apply a tourniquet and treat wounds. In addition to classroom teaching, a hands-on learning course will help students to learn how to use field equipment. EMTs who serve as paramedics also receive more detailed training on administering IVs and medication. After the training, EMTs need to pass a licensing exam and go through a background check.

A registered nurse has the training and certification required by her country or state and works with a nursing license.
