Canal+ to merge Showmax and DStv into one global streaming platform

Canal+ to Merge Showmax and Dstv, canal+ Canal+, the new parent company of MultiChoice, has revealed plans to merge Showmax, DStv Stream, and its own Canal+ online service into a single all-in-one streaming app.

The French media giant, which recently completed its takeover of MultiChoice, says the goal is to create a “super app” that combines African and international entertainment on one unified platform — simplifying how millions of subscribers access content.

A Unified Streaming Vision

Maxime Saada, CEO of Canal+, confirmed that the merger is part of a strategy to strengthen the company’s global position and better compete with streaming giants like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video.

“We want to make it as convenient and pleasant as possible for our subscribers to access all this great content — both global and local,” Saada said. “Eventually, the vision should be close to including all of this content in one super app.”

Canal+ currently controls all of MultiChoice’s services — including DStv, GOtv, Showmax, and DStv Stream — giving the company access to over 14 million subscribers across Africa.

Building a Global Content Powerhouse

Canal+ executives say the merger will unlock major advantages in content production and distribution.

David Mignot, who now leads Canal+ Africa, revealed that the combined companies will deliver over 10,000 hours of programming per year in up to 35 languages, creating one of the most diverse content libraries in the world.

By pooling Canal+’s European catalogue — which includes thousands of international films and series — with MultiChoice’s local productions, the company hopes to position Africa as a global content exporter, not just a regional broadcaster.

What It Means for Subscribers

If the proposed merger moves forward, DStv users could soon manage their entertainment — from live TV and sports to on-demand movies and international series — through one platform.

While Canal+ has not yet shared details on pricing or release timelines, analysts say the unified app could redefine Africa’s streaming ecosystem and put the group in a stronger position to compete globally.

For now, the focus is on seamless integration — ensuring that millions of Showmax and DStv subscribers across Africa can benefit from one connected, content-rich platform built for the digital era.
