Ashanti Airlines is owned by Ghanaian business mogul and co-founder of the Despite Group of Companies, Osei Kwame Despite and his partner, Ernest Ofori Sarpong.

As of September 7, 2022, the government has selected Ashanti Airlines as the official partner for Ghana’s home-based carrier (to be an international airline carrier representing Ghana).

According to confirmed reports, Ashanti Airlines is nearing the completion of its Air Operators Certificate (AOC) to enable it to operate as an airline in Ghana.

Two licenses, Air Carrier Licence (ACL) and Air Operator Certificate (AOC) are required by the aviation sector regulator, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), to be able to operate as an airline in Ghana.

The company is said to have an Air Carrier Licence (ACL) and is liaising with the aviation sector regulator for the final stages of its AOC process.

Ghana has been without a national airline since the collapse of Ghana International Airlines in 2010, following the demise of Ghana Airways in 2004. Attempts to establish a new home-based carrier have led to the signing of MoUs with Ethiopian Airlines and EgyptAir, respectively, with no clear outcome.

Unlike African World Airline and Passion Air, Kwame Despite’s Ashanti Airlines seek to partner government for the establishment of a home-based carrier.

Once everything is set, and the government approves this partnership, we are looking at an indigenous replacement for Ghana Airways.

September 7, 2022: According to AviationGhana, the Government of Ghana has finally been approved with Ashanti Airlines at the latter stages of completing all financial arrangements.

Ashanti Airlines, which has an Air Carrier License (ACL), is also nearing the completion of the issuance of its Air Operator Certificate, a certificate authorising an operator to carry out specified commercial air transport operations, to enable it to start operations by the close of this year.

We will keep tabs on this new company of the Despite Group, and update this article.
