Live in a Dorm
Some colleges actually require freshmen to live in the dorms. It is a great way to get to know other students and create some amazing bonds. If you know someone else starting at your university that year, you can request to room with them. To get the complete dorm life experience, consider asking for a random choice. Although it can be scary to live in a tiny room with someone you’ve never met, you might just end up making a best friend for life that way.
Join a Club
Colleges offer a wide variety of extracurricular activities for you to choose from. Joining at least one group will give you the opportunity to meet new people and have new experiences. You can choose to go with something you already know you like or completely step outside of your comfort zone. If you are looking for something more active, consider intramural sports. These are a great way to be on a team without the competitiveness that comes with the major college teams.
Take Unique Courses
Many students begin freshman year without knowing what they want to major in. That’s ok. College is the time to try out different classes to find out what it is you want to do with your life. Of course, you’ll need to take your core classes, but add a few in there that you wouldn’t normally choose. You never know when you’re going to find something that you love. It’s best to do this earlier rather than later in your college career so that you get a taste of different fields, which can help you in deciding your major.
Take a Trip
College is a place where you are going to make lifelong friends. What better way to bond with those friends than by taking a trip together? Check out Celebrity Miami cruises for an amazing spring break trip, or you can look at going overseas. Spring break is a great time to get in a beach vacation, but you can plan something more elaborate for the summer. If you want to do a larger trip, consider planning it for after graduation as a way to celebrate.
Attend Sporting Events
There’s no better way to get in the college spirit than to attend some sporting eventing. If you aren’t into sports, that’s ok. You can still go tailgate, hang out with your friends and show your school spirit. Football is one of the most popular games to go to, and student tickets are usually discounted. In the winter, you can check out a hockey or basketball game. You can even go on fan buses and travel to different schools if you’re up for it.
If you have the opportunity to study abroad during college, you should take it. If you’re studying a foreign language, you can try going to a country with that native tongue. You’ll be able to continue your education while learning about a different culture first hand. You may be able to find the opportunity to do this over the summer, but check with your advisor. Not all classes will be available abroad, so you will need to work it carefully into your course load.
College can be stressful, but it’s important to try to enjoy it while you are there. It will go by faster than you think, and the next thing you know you’ll be looking back at those days with fond memories. Try to dabble in every aspect of the college life and get the full experience. Make the most of every moment you can, and try to appreciate those incredible four years.
