We’re now into the second half 2019 and boy oh boy has it been a good year so far for video gaming. 2018 itself was a banner year, with the likes of Red Dead Redemption II and God of War, with a mighty medley of new games and yet more to come over the next few months, 2019 could be set to beat it.

Let’s take a look at some of the hottest video games of the year so far.

Video Games Released

Name: A Plague Tale: Innocence

A Plague Tale Innocence

What makes it special?: It’s an action-adventure-stealth game developed by Asobo Studio for PS4, Microsoft Windows and Xbox One. For a game where the scenario is pretty tragic, the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Gamers follow the dark tale of young Amicia and her little brother, Hugo, who journey into the most harrowing parts of history. Basically, you have to help them escape the plague, giant, ravenous rats and the inquisition…

Standout features: The stunning visuals. Just about every element in the game, from the mazes, to backgrounds, companions and alchemy, is used to let the world unravel around you as you play. as you play.

Name: Kingdom Hearts 3

Kingdom Hearts 3

What makes it special?: It’s an amalgamation of all your favourite disney characters: what’s not to like? This arrived in January this year for PS4 and Xbox One.

Standout features: In the latest version of Kingdom Hearts, there’s a greater emphasis on character mobility, with Sora able to jump on certain enemies and to wall run. There’s now also Attraction Flow and Keyblade Transformation, new super attack options that can be triggered under certain fighting conditions.

Name: Apex Legends

Apex Legends

What makes it special?: It’s a ‘balls-to-the-wall’ game of hot fury and non-stop action. Think endless bullet storms, characters with super powers, top-shelf weapon designs and, unlike many games on the current market, it’s free to play. Instead of loot boxes, you get Apex Pack and Battle packs. This is a refreshing change, given that loot boxes have recently come under fire as one of the handfuls of ways that videos games replicate online gambling behaviours.

Standout features: Battle pass rewards which can include music packs that play when you ‘drop’ or win, skydiving emotes, and loading screens.

Name: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro Shadows Die Twice

What makes it special?: A lonesome revenge tale in an aesthetically breathtaking world that entices curiosity, exploration, and brutal, adrenalin packed fights till death; this is not for the faint-hearted.

Standout features: It’s all about precision, making it a very difficult game to compete. Though frustrating, Sekiro is incredibly satisfying when you get it right.

Would you believe that there’s more to come? Well, you better, because there is. It seems the above were just tasters, little starters to whet your appetite. The main course is yet to be served.

Video Games yet to Come

Name: Control (August 27th 2019)

What makes it special?: The next game from Remedy Entertainment is a merging of Max Payne’s gunplay and Alan Wake‘s surreal creepy atmosphere. With supernatural abilities and a morphing pistol (Service Weapon), you play to fight off mind-controlled soldiers and trans-dimensional entities.

Standout features: The possibility to buy extra items to boost or improve your gameplay makes the experience even more exciting and individual.

Name: Wolfenstein: Youngblood (July 26th 2019)

What makes it special?: For those that are familiar with the Wolfenstein series, Wolfenstein: Youngblood is a standalone sequel to Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus serving as a prelude to Wolfenstein 3. With an arsenal of brand new weapons and gadgets, you can team up with a friend or play alone to liberate Paris from the Nazis.

Standout features: If you do opt to play solo, you can get an AI partner so you don’t have to go on a rampage through the Nazi forces alone.

Name: The Legend of Zelda, The Link’s Awakening (September 20th 2019)

What makes it special?: It’s been over 25 years since The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening first graced the Nintendo Game Boy. The much-anticipated special edition is set to be released this September for Nintendo Switch. Dubbed the ‘Dreamer’s’ edition, the game will come with the base game itself as well as the ‘Dreamer Art Book’, which “features concept art from the Nintendo Switch version of the game.”

Standout features: It’s an update of a timeless classic!

Name:  Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

What makes it special?: From the makers of Apex Legends and the Titanfall series, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a brand new third-person Star Wars game where the gamer is on a quest to rebuild the Jedi Order playing as Jedi Padawan, Cal Kestis, who is lost, all alone and on the run.

Standout features: There are new icons locations to roam, as well as new weapons and gear, and new enemies!

As you can see, 2019 has already been a real treat for video game fans. However, with so many titles yet to be released, it’s certainly not over yet!
